OVERVIEW: Saltspring Zen Circle's study retreat includes periods of zazen (seated meditation), kinhin (walking meditation), Dharma talks, and exploring traditional and contemporary Zen texts and themes through presentation, discussion groups, and other creative formats.
SCHEDULE: The retreat begins at 7:00 PM on Thursday evening with an introductory teaching followed by zazen and kinhin. On Friday and Saturday, periods of meditation and study will be scheduled throughout the day from approximately 8 AM to 9 PM. On Sunday, following morning practice and lunch, the retreat will conclude at 1:30 PM.
FEE: The fee for the retreat, including three vegetarian lunches, is on a sliding scale, from $180 to $225. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. A limited amount of financial assistance may be available. For financial assistance, please contact the Registrars, Ben and Michelle, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
DANA: In addition to the retreat fee, which we deliberately keep low, participants are asked to offer a donation (dana) to our teacher, Eihei Peter Levitt, who, in keeping with Zen tradition, serves at our retreat without remuneration. This donation is part of the traditional practice of a mutual exchange of generosity, since it nourishes all who are involved. In that spirit, donations are offered during the retreat in an amount each participant finds appropriate. Anonymous donations may be offered in cash. However, if you wish to receive a charitable receipt for tax purposes, you may offer dana via a personal cheque made out to “Salt Spring Zen Circle”. These cheques are deposited and then given as cash to our teacher, thus preserving the anonymity of the giver. Envelopes for dana, along with relevant information, will be provided at the retreat. Please note that there are no ATM or banks in the vicinity of the retreat site.
MEALS: Three vegetarian lunches will be provided by the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga (SSCY), the cost of which is included in your registration fee. We will all eat lunch together on site in traditional oryoki style. Oryoki sets and instruction will be provided.
Participants are responsible for arranging their own breakfast and dinner, which may be eaten on or off-site. We will provide suggestions and details about food options, including restaurants and where to purchase food, so please keep an eye open for future emails on the subject once your registration has been confirmed.
You also have the choice to purchase breakfasts for $8 and/or dinners for $20 at the Centre. Please be sure to contact Hannah at the Centre at email@example.com to make arrangements for eating breakfast and/or dinner there no later than October 9. This must be done so that the Centre can plan for your meals. Breakfast will be served at 7:15 AM and dinner is at 5:30PM.
ACCOMMODATIONS: A limited number of off-site billets will be offered gratis by our on-island sangha members; please let us know right away if you need billeting, which will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
Staying at the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga: Participants wanting to stay at the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga (SSCY) during the retreat may find out the details of this option by emailing Hannah at the Centre directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you are staying at the Centre and also intend to have meals there, please indicate how many meals you wish to purchase when you email Hannah. Meal costs will be included in your total accommodations fee.

CANCELLATION POLICY: If your plans change and you are not able to attend the retreat, your payment will be returned in full, provided we hear from you by October 1, 2019.
If you cancel between October 2 and 9, and we are unable to fill your spot, we will retain a $30 cancellation fee.
If you cancel after October 10 and we are unable to fill your spot, we will retain a cancellation fee of $100 to cover the cost of food we will have already ordered.
