• RJOS Health Strategy and Advocacy Research (Health STAR) Fellowship Application


  • INTRODUCTION

  • The Health Strategy and Advocacy Research (Health STAR) Fellowship was created in partnership between the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Orthopaedic Political Action Committee (OrthoPAC). The goal of the Fellowship is to further RJOS participation in, and understanding of, Orthopaedic advocacy and health policy.
  • Health Star Fellowship Applicant Eligibilty
    To be eligible to apply for the Health STAR Fellowship, you must meet all three of the following criteria:
    1. The Fellow will be an RJOS member in good standing (Active, Candidate or Fellow members only) and
    2. The Fellow will be member of the AAOS PAC, and must remain a member for at least five years following the Fellowship and
    3. The Fellow will be a member of her/his State Orthopaedic Society
  • Health Star Progam Activities

    1. Interaction with Mentor and Project - The Health STAR Fellow will be paired with an Advocacy Mentor from AAOS. The Health STAR Fellow and Mentor will communicate regularly about participation and will work together with the Fellow on her/his project.
    2. Meeting Participation - The Health Star Fellow will attend two meetings:
    a. AAOS Council on Advocacy and National Orthopaedic Leadership Conference (COA and NOLC) in Washington, DC as a non-voting "ad-hoc" member.
    • The Fellow will attend the AAOS Board of Specialties and Board of Councilors Sessions at the meeting
    • The Fellow will attend the COA meetings and events
    • The Fellow will visit the AAOS Office of Government Relations (OGR)

    b. State Society Programs - General Considerations

    • Generally involves a trip to the State Capital advocacy meeting with members of their home State Assembly and State Senate about issues to be determined by the State Society and other specialty physician groups
    • The Fellow may be involved in planning and executing the CME program organized by her/his home State Society
    • The OGR will inform the Fellow about relevant progress with State legislation so that she/he can learn about the process and can apply it to her/his home state issues

    c. State Society Programs - Specific Considerations

    • The Fellow will devise a plan with her/his mentor on a specific issue or topic for the State Society
    • A visit to the state office to observe how it is run is recommended
    • The Fellow will be in contact with the state lobbyist(s) for states having lobbyist(s)

    3. Media Involvement

    a. SIRIUS XM "Doctor Radio"

    • The Health STAR Fellow will guest co-host at least one show on SIRIUS XM Business Radio's "The Orthopaedics Show" or "The Sports Medicine Show"
    • There may be an opportunity for the Fellow to also participate in SIRIUS XM Business Radio's "Leadership in Action"

    b. Optional but recommended attendance at the AAOS Specialty Physician & Dentist Candidate Workshop, co-sponsored with other specialties

    c. Training - The Health STAR Fellow may attend the AAOS Media training at the NOLC, along with any other media training opportunities that arise and are relevant

  • STAR FELLOWSHIP RECIPIENT RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Deliverables
    a. Complete at least one publishable manuscript to heath policy as it relates to Orthopaedics or specialty medicine. This may be submitted to a specialty peer-reviewed journal OR to a known health policy journal. This work will be submitted for presentation at a national meeting.
    b. Submit a piece for AAOS Now for the Advocacy section
    c. Submit a brief report to the PAC Newsletter for publication there, emphasizing lessons learned on how the Ortho PAC is supporting orthopaedic surgery
    d. Submit a 1000-word article to an orthopaedic or advocacy blog
    2. Establish and maintain a relationship with a mentor
    3. Attend State and National Conferences as outlined above. Complete brief written summaries of their involvement for submission to their mentor. Assist in drafting talking points for topics of interest
    4. Learn how to use media to effectively communicate relevant concepts
    5. Establish and maintain relationships with the AAOS Office of Government Relations and State Orthopaedic Society
    6. Establish relationships with Members of Congress. Learn to effectively communicate on policy and regulatory matters as they relate to Orthopaedics. Ultimately, the Fellow would become an Orthopaedic Ambassador and assist in planning a fundraiser for a candidate
    7. Maintain membership in the AAOS PAC - optimally, at the Capitol Club Level
