In Virginia, a notary public is a state-authorized official empowered to witness the signing of documents, thereby validating their legal standing. Their role involves authenticating official documents and transactions for governmental, judicial, or other formal purposes. This includes:

Witnessing signatures: Verifying the identity of signatories and their voluntary execution of documents.
Administering oaths and affirmations: Officially swearing in individuals for testimonies or affidavits.
Taking acknowledgments: Certifying that individuals have personally appeared before the notary and acknowledged their signatures.
Certifying copies: Attesting that a photocopy is a true and accurate reproduction of an original document.
Please note: Travel convenience fees may be higher for locations outside of Loudoun, Fairfax, and Prince William counties. An additional emergency service fee applies for immediate service requests, and a Sunday convenience fee may also be added.
