Thank you for signing up for the Screening Test.

If your language proficiency in your second language has never been tested, the Screening Test will provide you with a reasonable estimate of your proficiency level in speaking, listening, and in reading in the non-English language. In addition, the Screening Test also includes a basic assessment of health literacy to help determine your readiness to take the medical interpreter program or to take the MISA Exam, which is a challenge exam for consecutive interpreting and sight translation in both languages.

For the purposes of this assessment, you should take the Screening Test if you are not a native speaker of Russian or if you do not have a college degree in Spanish. Here are some situations where you may have gained language proficiency in Russian.

• The Self-Assessment for Language Proficiency was developed and adapted from the ILR (Interagency Language Roundtable) Language Skill Level Descriptions Levels 1, 2,  2+ and 3.
• This assessment is NOT a substitute for Oral Language Proficiency or a formal language testing exam where the candidate actually speaks in the language being tested.
• This self-assessment is NOT an indication of the ability to interpret. Interpreting requires other sets of skills, and fluency in two languages is only one of the skills needed for interpreting.
• This self-assessment provides a rough estimate of the candidate's language proficiency level and health literacy and should only be used as a preliminary guide for screening purposes.
• This self-assessment may be used for screening, placement and/or advising purposes.
• This self-assessment may be used for planning a course of self-study or in designing learning activities to meet the identified deficiencies in language, knowledge base, or fluency.

To estimate your language proficiency, answer the following questions on speaking, listening, health literacy and fluency in the non-native language. 

We recommend at least Level 2 Language Proficiency and Fluency in the Self-Assessment to enroll in the medical interpreter program or to take the Medical Interpreting Skills Assessment (MISA).

At the end of the all the assessments, you will receive the total score for Speaking and Listening Skills, Health Literacy and Fluency and Reading Fluency and recommendations based on your performance.

NOTE: It is important to answer the questions as accurately as possible to the best of your knowledge so that the results would reflect your actual proficiency based on your own self-assessment.

About the Assessment

The fee for the assessment is $110.00. The test should be completed within 30 to 45 minutes.

After completing payment processing, you will receive an email confirmation and your authorization code with the link to take the test.

Please complete the test within 5 days of signing up for the test. Please contact us with any questions so we can assist you personally.

There are four areas to be assessed:

1. Language Proficiency Test: Speaking Self-Assessment + Listening Self-Assessment
2. Health Literacy Test: Basic Health Literacy + Intermediate Health Literacy
3. Language Fluency
4. Reading Fluency

You will also be recording using your computer. Please test your computer recorder now by attaching a headset-microphone to your computer. If you do not have a headset-microphone, you may try to record without one. Make sure that you are able to hear your voice.

The fee is $110.00 for the test.

Once the test is started there is no refund. If you have technical difficulties and you are not able to complete the test, please notify us immediately by email so we can assist you as soon as possible if during office hours. If after office hours, we will respond on the next day. We may substitute a different format for testing, or you may repeat the test. 

There is no refund if you do not complete the test, or if the result shows that your language proficiency is not what you were expecting for the test. If you choose not to take the test after payment is completed, there is a $20.00 cancellation fee.
