Pledge to Take Action to Stop the Weymouth Compressor Station
Enbridge is making preparations to construct a 7700 horsepower fracked gas compressor station in a densely populated neighborhood in North Weymouth, MA, as part of their Atlantic Bridge project. This compressor station will not only exacerbate the pollution that already exists near the Fore River Basin, due to existing industrial facilities, but it will also threaten the safety of nearby towns and communities.
Because compressors are toxic emitters, constantly noisy, and, in the event of an accident, have a wide blast zone, they are generally sited on 40+ acres in rural areas. This compressor station would be built on only four acres, in an overburdened urban community that is home to 10 industrial facilities, including two power plants, two oil tank farms, and a hazardous waste facility. It is adjacent to two designated Environmental Justice neighborhoods, which should be protected by law from further environmental and public safety impacts.
Air toxins in the Fore River Basin have been measured at levels that are harmful to public health. Cancer, respiratory and neurological diseases in the area are above state averages. Benzene, methylene chloride, formaldehyde, 1,3 butadiene, to name a few, have been found at levels above state guidelines and are all known carcinogens. Despite these violations of state guidelines, the MassDEP approved an air quality permit for the compressor station, stating that background levels of pollution do not need to be considered.
Construction of the methane-emitting compressor would also contribute further to the climate crisis. We do not support the siting of this compressor station in Weymouth or any other location. We simply cannot continue to build out new fossil fuel infrastructure.
We have been fighting Enbridge's proposal for five years now and have been successful in delaying their plans, but our work is not over yet. Enbridge began the initial phases of construction in December.
If you want to join FRRACS in resisting the compressor station, please indicate what level of support you are able to provide by filling out the form below.
Thank you, as always.
