2019-2020 School Year
Dear Parents/Guardians:
We are so excited to have your student at Forward & Beyond! We are confident that you will see a positive change in your student as they embark on this season with their dedicated coaches. A grant was funded to measure impact, and found the longer students participate in Forward & Beyond, the higher student’s grades rise, the better their school attendance, and fewer behavioral problems occur. Your student will be met with compassion and will be well taken care of at Forward and Beyond as they excel academically and in character. Most of all, your student will have a BLAST connecting with their coaches and other students!
Forward and Beyond focuses programming on four key areas:
- Perceptions: We will dive into three components of perceptions: a) How do I view myself? b) How do I view others? and, c) What does my view of myself and others tell me about where I want to go?, What do I want to do and Who do I want to be? Obtaining a critical understanding of these concepts allow our students to break down barriers to learning and promote growth.
- Possibilities: Think BIGGER, think BETTER, think BEYOND! We encourage our students to dream and that there are no limits to what they can achieve. Within the curriculum, we will have dream sessions that allow the students to see their desires on paper and make them tangible. The students will learn the possibilities of their dreams begin with themselves.
- Process: Students will engage in processing activities. These engagement processes will underscore that a plan – with specific, practical, and actionable steps – are necessary to achieve their goals. Learning how to create an organized strategy will support student success outcomes and strengthen character building.
- Progress: It is imperative that the students measure the distance from where they are to where they truly want to be. Developing an awareness of progress in this context will allow students, parents, and teachers to see just how far they have come. Progress, in this framework, will allow the students to celebrate each victory that they achieve.
4 Ways to Help Your Student:
- Connect the Dots: Your student will be given a Challenge Step each week to help him/her internalize the FAB Core Values being taught. Discussing the Challenge Step with your student and helping him/her complete it each week will maximize the effectiveness and long-term impact the program can have on his/her life (Challenge Steps can be found on his/her take home journal sheet).
- Day Trips: Sign your student up to attend a Day Trip where they will be challenged and inspired!
- Awards Night: Students do not always show it, but it is a BIG DEAL when parents show up to support them on the final night of the last season. We will have a brief informational meeting for parents before passing out student awards. You will also get to meet your student’s coach and team.
- Summer Camp: Our FAB Summer Leadership Camp is a fun and exciting way for you to invest in the future development of your student in a long-term tangible way. This camp is designed to enhance the leadership skills that your student has been learning throughout the entire year while allowing them to engage with other leaders from other FAB schools throughout the district.
