The Red Hat Shelton Challenge is a six-day residential experience to help students expand their knowledge and skills of what it takes to be a leader. Students will participate in activities that will help them have a greater understanding for a variety of topics including personal leadership assessment and interpersonal dynamics; the role of values and ethics in leadership; leadership traits and approaches; teambuilding and empowering others; civic and social responsibility; and goal setting. Students also have the opportunity to participate in team building activities, low and high ropes courses, a coordinated service project, and fun night activities to help students get to know others participating in the program.
APPLICATION SELECTION CRITERIA
Applicants need to be a rising 9th through 12th grade student.
Commitment to Academics - Applicants should have a 3.0 GPA or higher (Unweighted). This is preferred for our applicants but is not required.
Potential for leadership - Applicants should have a history of participation/ involvement in school or community activities and/or a goal of personal growth particularly in the area of leadership development. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to understand and apply concepts of values-based leadership and selfless service, to be willing to critically examine their own lives and the situations in which they are involved.
Values-based character - Applicants should demonstrate characteristics of high personal character - Applicants should be aware of how they might 1) benefit from participation in this leadership development concept, 2) contribute to the development of the Red Hat Shelton Challenge experience, and 3) contribute to the broader community. Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to taking advantage of the opportunities provided by the Program.
Commitment to personal growth - Applicants must have a desire to actively participate in developing themselves as leaders by seeking out new experiences, gaining new skills, and making a commitment to ongoing self-discovery and personal development.
Commitment to give back to local community - Applicants should have an awareness of themselves as members of broader communities that they both depend on and help to shape. Applicants should exhibit an active commitment to responsible stewardship and a desire to help address community issues through participation and service.
COST TO ATTEND PROGRAM
The cost to attend the Red Hat Shelton Challenge six-day residential program is $750. This cost includes all curriculum materials, lodging and food, low and high ropes course, transportation during week, and night activities.
After submitting the application, you can pay the $100 deposit to hold space in the program by clicking here. The deposit will go toward the full payment of $750.
