If the application is in cold climate, is heated body or insulated body required?

Some materials need to be kept at temperature. There are insulated boxes, and options to use exhaust to heat the box. Understand the customer need. Exhaust can be modified beyond (pipe exiting) the SCR system to accommodate body heat.

Is a pintle hook for a pup trailer required?

Hook height is very specific. Engineering needs to know the requirement from top of frame to center of hook. Supply this information on the sales order. Use comments field to record height.

Are trailer connections required for the customer's application?

Required when pulling a trailer. Consider if trailer ABS is required. Optional powered equipment can create a need to a second connector (ISO 3731). Considerations: Air and Light line location and style.

Will this truck be a transfer dump application?

This is a very unique application. Fixed bed on truck with a pup trailer that transfers its box into empty truck box for dumping. Operator controls some body movement from outside of the cab. Considerations: Controls, Hooks, Trailer connections

Will this truck be a super dump or Super 12/Super 18?

You must know this prior to spec'ing the truck. All of these configurations include a flying/trailing tag axle. You need to allow of this and work with body builder to install. Considerations: Frame configuration, Brake and Air Dryer sizing, Controls

Flying tag axles are not installed by an OE manufacturer. You will need to schedule with a body builder and include in your bid.

VEHICLE OPERATION

What Bridge Law consideration applies?

Federal Bridge Law does not permit axle loading in excess of 20K per axle w/o special permits or in states w/ grandfathered state/local regulations. State Bridge laws can be more/less stringent & are enforced based upon what roads you operate on. Check Internet. Considerations: Creep rating of axles and suspension.

Dimensional restrictions are traditionally the same across the nation, but many states enforce tighter regulations for loads than the federal legal limits. Overall width/length/height/weight may dictate the need for special permits. Considerations: Body size, Body type, Frame fit, Frame strength

What percentage of mileage is on highway/interstate/2-lane roads?

What are the operating and surface conditions at the site?

If the vehicle will always be operating with the same site conditions note it here. If the site condition vary dramatically enter mixed and accompany with definition. Considerations: Tires, Gearing, Axle locking

Are there known temperature extremes? What are the expected ambient temps in both summer and winter?

In cold climates the customer should consider engine heater, fuel heat,fuel filter heat, etc. High temperatures can impact the cooling system. Considerations: Fuel heaters or coolers, Radiator size, winter fronts.

DRIVETRAIN

Which PTO style is required?

At a minimum controls should be coded to ensure requirements are met. Keep air tanks clear of transmission. With a thrushaft PTO exhaust cannot be routed behind transmission. Considerations: Control style, Clear frame LH/RH/Top/Bottom etc.

Lift axle requirement?

Try to get as much wiring, connectivity, and programming done at the factory as possible.

If an air suspension is desired, can you plumb to auto dump bags with PTO engagement?

High CG loads (box with hoist extended) is unstable with air in suspension air bags. Switch on dash will dump air, but a safer installation always dumps the air with PTO running.

Is rear axle brake chamber relocation required?

Up-sized parking brakes is often required with lift axles. If the chambers stick out back you want to be certain they are protected to avoid downtime associated with damage. 30/36 chambers will interfere with the roller on an asphalt spreader, even with the largest tires when tread wear and deflection are encountered.

Paving operation is indicated by box style. If this vehicle will be pushed by a paver then consider air disc brakes, rotated brake chamber position, or a rear suspension that locates chambers on forward side of axle.

CHASSIS

How much fuel is required? 8 hrs, 12 hrs of operation?

How long will the vehicle operate? Where is the vehicle filled? Calculate to determine how much fuel should be on the vehicle. Considerations: Fuel consumption, Tanks and DEF use.

What exhaust style is preferred, RH under door after-treatment or in-series?

Pipes can be back of cab, if rack or boom will not interfere. Side of cab tailpipe is more common for trying to maintain a clear back of cab to give body builders most flexibility.

Preferred locations for batteries, fuel and DEF tanks?

Fuel requirements dictate tank sizes. Exhaust typically blocks position RH under cab. Internal design criteria may impact customer expectations. Many body installations require clear frame behind the cab, especially when multiple lift axles are installed. Finding a location for Fuel/DEF/Exhaust/Batteries and a Hydraulic tank can be challenging. Do not over spec fuel or DEF capacity. If outriggers are going to be added by body builder, consider clear space prior to placing tanks.
