What is to be transported or hauled?

Some trailers associated with heavy haul applications have very specific power needs. Considerations: Power BOC/S? Jumpstart terminals/Trailer connections

How often will this kind of haul be made?

If multiple trailers are used consider evaluation of the worst case scenario when calculating swing clearance. Example: widest trailer width, largest kingpin setting, shortest landing gear clearance from within the group of trailers used.

How much weight is required on the sales order?

This is for Prime Movers and Heavy-Heavy Hauls. You will need to refer to regional/state requirements. In some applications the vehicle is limited to the GCWR listed on the Sales Order or Invoice. You may need to communicate this need directly to Engineering.

What is the maximum anticipated payload weight?

Payload is defined as the weight of the cargo/freight/material that is transported. if this varies use the worst case (largest) value. Look at the axle manufacturers approval guidelines or suspension data in sales tool. Considerations: Cooling/Axle/Suspension combinations

What is the typical anticipated payload weight?

Many trucks are built to haul occasional loads that are extremely heavy, but do not operate that way every day. This is important for gearing, know what the conditions are for the 'normal' operation. Considerations: Gearing, Transmission

INSTALLED EQUIPMENT

Need room for a headache rack?

There are options to locate A&E lines rearward to ensure they can connect with a trailers. Ask for option to move as far rearward as possible (just ahead of the tandem). Considerations: Move the hosetenna rearward, need work, beacon, turn/stop light wiring?

What are the dimensions and weights of the headache rack?

Adding permanent weight to a chassis impacts axle loading. You must account for the weight of items added that stay with the tractor in order to calculate the correct fifth wheel setting. Considerations:Swing clearance, Weight distribution, Front axle loading, Move batteries to rack (?)

What kind of trailer will be used? Lowbed? Articulated?

Select the trailer type and supply any special considerations that the trailer may warrant. Verify air and light line requirements. Will they need an ISO 3731 connector to power trailer equipment? If Other is selected, provide explanation in the comments field.

What is the weight of the empty trailer(s)?

May need to evaluate faster operating speeds when the trailer is unloaded and the vehicle is returning home. Many other trailers are extremely heavy, even when unloaded.

Pulling a jeep?

A jeep is a form of dolly that adds support on the ground, spreading out the load. Since they provide an additional pivot point, the jeep is typically removed on site for maneuverability. Creep refers to loads added to axles and suspension when lift axles are raised for on-site maneuverability. Check with Engineering for approval guidelines.

The use of the jeep will have an effect on creep rating. Contact Engineering to ensure axle loading with jeep detached will meet manufacturers guidelines.

If the unit is a prime mover, will they use a 5th wheel or another configuration?

Hitches typically require a square end of frame. Rockinger hitches are not installed at the factory. If you use a published pintle hook you need to add information to the sales order telling Engineering the desired height. The configurations other than 5th wheel many times use ballast weight over the drive axles.

This service may require after market A&E supply to front bumper. Front and rear frame considerations. Note any special considerations in comments field.

Width of all trailers or loads at the king pin?

Does the customer ever pull a 102 inch wide trailer? If the tractor will connect to multiple trailers, some in the group may have different dimensions. Be certain to document these.

Calculate total combination of axles (include any jeep with Trailer)

Axle count exceeding 9 typically requires upsized air dryer and potetnially air compressor as well. If the trailer will use chassis air make certain to quote the correct dryer/compressor.

Need tractor and full truck connections?

You need to know the type of connection that the vehicle should provide. Tractor kit, Full Truck connections in the end of frame, or a combination kit that includes both types.

VEHICLE OPERATION

Does Bridge Law consideration apply?

For true Heavy Haul applications the weight hauled requires permits, so Bridge Laws do not apply.

Is this an existing construction or moving truck fleet?

Try to question what works and what doesn't.

What is the anticipated annual mileage?

Mileage is a consideration for Warranty choices. If the vehicle is flagged for Vocational Warranty the warranty coverage period will vary. Considerations: Fuel, Annual mileage, Warranty

What is the haul profile and distance?

Select the road conditions that best meet the vehicles operation.Accompany the Mixed Roads selections with the percentage of time vehicle will encounter hills/off asphalt/off road operation. Considerations: Gearing, Cooling, Suspension

Capture typical travel speeds when operating empty versus loaded?

Many vehicles in this application will have multiple speed considerations. Weight and road profile may limit the loaded speed. If 50% of the vehicle use is while unloaded, two road speed profiles may need to be analyzed for proper gearing. Considerations: Proper gearing, Driver satisfaction, Travel time

What percentage of mileage is on highway/interstate/2-lane roads?

Enter detail in Comments about percentage of time the vehicle will operate on paved road surfaces with grades of 6% or less. This will aid in rear axle ratio selection, which most likely will be a blend on fuel economy and performance. Considerations: Tires, Gearing

What are the operating and surface conditions at site?

If the vehicle will always be operating with the same site conditions note that. If the site conditions vary dramatically indicate what is expected. Considerations: Tires, Gearing

What grades (length & steepness, both up and down) are expected?

Typically this refers to sustained grades of 1/2 mile or longer. Most U.S. Interstate roads do not exceed 6%. There are some exceptions, and many unique site exceptions.. Considerations: Tires, Gearing, Cooling

Are there known temperature extremes? What are the expected ambient temps in both summer and winter?

In cold climates the customer should consider engine heater, fuel heat,fuel filter heat, etc. High temperatures can impact the cooling system,especially in stationary mode. Considerations: Fuel heaters or coolers, Radiator size, winter fronts.

DRIVETRAIN

Which transmission style is required?

Allison transmissions are perfect for pushing loads since they don't break torque. Ultrashift Plus transmissions are automated transmissions that have an option for manual operation. With Ultrashift Plus be sure to select the right series for your operation. Customer preference, but can impact cooling.

Which PTO style is required?

At a minimum controls should be coded to ensure requirements are met. Make sure the clutch assist, if used, doesn't interfere w/ 6 or 8 bolt PTO's. Keep air tanks clear of transmission. With a thru-shaft PTO exhaust cannot be routed behind transmission. Thru-shaft not available with 13 and 18 speed transmissions.

Will radiator provide sufficient cooling?

In general most HD chassis should be able to pull 240K even with an Allison transmission. Some sales tools you not permit a GCWR this high. Be certain the communicate actual GCWR to Engineering for the review, if it exceeds the sales tool limits.

Which rear axles?

See manufacturers Application Guidelines. Heavy Haul can have higher GCWR limits than Linehaul just due to duty cycle. Review the correct application, do not use generalities. Guidelines on Internet, or ask Engineering. Considerations: Robustness, Pulling capacity, Traction

Can you get by with a 2-spd rear axle versus auxiliary transmission?

If pulling more than 150K-160K dual gearing is required. The DT axles will work up to 185K-190K. With increased GCWR ,or need for Crosslock/Diff locks, a 2-spd or 4-spd auxiliary transmission will be required. Considerations: Cost, Weight limit, No provision for Cross/Diff-locks

Will you require an auxiliary transmission?

Examples: NAMCO 2-spd with 1 to 1 and 2 to 1 ratio rated at 30,000 lb.ft. torque,. TCC APO1750 4-spd, with 2.81 to .81 overdrive rated at 17,500. Spicer AT1202 2-speed rated at 17,500. Considerations: Cost, Input torque, Gearing

Lift axle requirement?

Try to get as much wiring, connectivity, and programming done at the factory as possible. Factory installations reduce rework and up-fit, plus do not disturb the engineering efforts (piping, routing, air and brake systems) of the vehicle.

Over inflation valve?

With an air suspension this is a nice option to have on low bed height trailers. Allows the bags to pickup front of trailer a few inches to create clearance over road obstacles.

CHASSIS

How much fuel is required? 8 hrs, 12 hrs of operation?

How long will the vehicle operate? Where is the vehicle filled, is fuel brought out to the vehicle? Considerations: Fuel consumption, Tanks and DEF use.

Use to estimate fuel use (for tank sizing only)

If using a fifth wheel, what is the anticipated vertical kingpin load?

Kingpin load will dictate size of the fifth wheel, suspension, axles and tires

If using a fifth wheel, what is the required king pin size?

Kingpin size, 2 inch; or 3.5 inch pin, will dictate specific 5th wheel

Need a special 5th wheel slider or fixed?

Use Weight Distribution to figure out where the 5th wheel must be set for axle loading. Review Swing Clearance to be sure the required setting is achievable. Longer sliders and rear settings behind bogie are not uncommon for heavy hauls.

Need ramps?

Move 5th wheel rear setting to negative to align. Order square EOF as opposed to tractor taper and modify later when customer ramps are installed in the after-market.

Preferred locations for batteries, fuel and DEF tanks?

Fuel requirements dictate tank sizes. Exhaust typically blocks position RH under cab. Internal design criteria may impact customer expectations. Many body installations require clear frame behind the cab, especially when multiple lift axles are installed. Finding a location for Fuel/DEF/Exhaust/Batteries and a Hydraulic tank can be challenging. Do not over spec fuel or DEF capacity. If outriggers are going to be added by body builder, consider clear space prior to placing tanks.
