At the 2020 Congress, APPROACH, we are asked to come near and draw closer to the essence of paper, of washi, and of paper art. It is only by APPROACHing paper and paper art, that we as artists can engage in deep conversation with paper as an artistic medium. As we listen more closely to paper and to paper pulp, we understand what we can ask paper to do, how paper is willing to transform, and how the paper is willing to accept the artist’s mark. An APPROACH can be artistic, experimental, or based in research and long study. Through all of these methods, we will APPROACH the true essence of paper in Toyota City, Japan, in partnership with PAPER TOYOTA 2020 Executive Committee, Toyota-shi Obara Paper Art Museum Washi no Furusato, and Toyota Obara Washi Kougei Association from September 17 – 23, 2020.
