What is the Raleigh Tennis Association?
The Raleigh Tennis Association’s (RTA) is a Community Tennis Association representing the Raleigh area. It is a registered non-profit 501(3)(c) organization whose primary mission is to promote and grow tennis. The RTA is affiliated with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) through it’s relationship with USTA North Carolina. Locally, the RTAoperates USTA Adult Leagues, USTA Junior Team Tennis, RTA Leagues and other events and activities geared towards making tennis accessible to all who wish to play. The organization also works with local clubs, facilities, and governments to ensure that adequate tennis facilities exist to satisfy the local tennis communities. The RTA is primarily a volunteer based organization including a 10-person Board of Directors that provides oversight and direction for the organization.
RTA Board of Directors
The Board of Directors consists of 4 officers (President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary) and 6 at-large Directors. Each Director is elected to the BoD by a majority vote of the current Directors and serves a 2-year term. Five Director terms expire each odd and even year. Nominees are recommended by the Nominating Committee to the BoD for consideration and voting at the last meeting of the current year. Nominees that are approved will start their term at the first BoD meeting of the following year. The RTA BoD meets in-person every other month and more often if special meeting are needed. In between the meetings, business may be communicated and conducted via email correspondence. In addition to the BoD meetings, Directors are expected to serve on and/or Chair at least one RTA committee and volunteer to help with events and activities. On average, a Director can expect to dedicate 4 – 6 hours of their time per month. Ideal Director candidates are active in tennis either as a player, parent, or volunteer with other tennis related groups. They are passionate about sharing the sport with others and want to see it grow in the Raleigh area. Having served on other volunteer BoD’s is a plus and having good experience, knowledge, and skills in a variety of areas such as business, marketing, fundraising, finance, law, community organization, and non-profit governance adds tremendous value to the RTA organization. It is key to the RTA that each Director is committed to actively participating in the organization and Raleigh tennis community inorder to effectively continue our mission.
