William Paca/OPR Elementary is one of eight schools piloting the Lucy Calkins Units of Study reading program. This program is based on a reader's workshop model, where students are given choice in the books they read as they practice skills they’ve learned during the daily mini-lesson.
As a result, each classroom library needs to be stocked with high-interest books in good condition on each reading level (A-Z). The goal of the Units of Study Classroom Library Initiative is to help teachers make their classroom library a welcoming place that meets the needs of all readers.
According to Lucy Calkins, the bulk of reading workshop should be spent, "reading, in the fullest sense of the word: reading, imagining, questioning, comparing, researching, and reading some more." In addition, students reading on lower levels are expected to read 8-10 books per week and intermediate students reading chapter books should read 1-4 books per week. Meeting this
requirement can bediffi cult if teachers do not have enough books in their classroom libraries. With 75% of our students not meeting expectations on the PARCC reading assessment, we want to get as many engaging books in their hands as possible to help bridge the gaps in their literacy learning.
