Through the generosity of
Three students came up with the idea of a Morning Literary Club to target the student population who read below grade-level. Students will be compelled to participate as part of a class activity and they can additionally participate voluntarily during Hawk Soar (a weekly opportunity for all students to participate in academic support activities - about 30 one hour sessions this school year). Creative Writing III students and three faculty members will mentor participants in the Morning Literary Club.
The lack of reading ability is viewed by successful students as a major impairment for dutiful students. Slow reading leaves students scrambling to catch up during instruction time causing stress and an inability to retain the lessons taught.
The goals of the program are:
1- Enhance the existing academic program by offering the opportunity for students to succeed in
reading and build confidence as they advance Lexile levels.
2 - The impact is improved reading skills last a lifetime! Reading skills can help individuals succeed in school, access better paying careers, and encourage reading for pleasure for a lifetime.
3 - This program is innovative as it will involve students teaching students. It provides an opportunity for advanced students to mentor reading as a life-long habit and reading as a means to becoming a stronger thinker, writer, and speaker.
