Greetings, Potential KGNU Board Member!
KGNU's Board members collectively play a vital role in the decision-making of the station. Your energy and commitment will help guide our community radio station into the future. The Nominating Committee is charged with recruiting potential Board candidates. If you are familiar with KGNU and share our vision of diverse community radio, you may be just the person we are looking for. KGNU’s vision statement is as follows:
KGNU envisions an actively engaged global community rooted in mutual respect, working together to advance a more equitable, just and environmentally sustainable society that ensures ALL peoples access TO and participation IN independent media.
If you are interested in serving on KGNU’s Board and want to be part of the decision-making body that helps the station and its community thrive, we invite you to apply.
REQUIREMENTS/PROCESS: Applicants should be KGNU members in good standing for at least one year, and provide three references, including at least one from KGNU volunteers or staff members and one from without. After reviewing your application, the Nominating Committee may contact you to arrange for an interview. Prior to your interview, you should attend at least two Committee meetings (including a standing Committee such as Programming, Nominating, or Budget) and two KGNU Board meetings. The Board meets at 6pm on the first Monday of each month. Currently, we are holding our meetings both in-person and via web conferencing. Go to kgnu.org for instructions on how to join the meetings online.
All Board members should exhibit good listening skills, be respectful of others’ opinions, and support KGNU’s mission and vision. Board members work on specific projects that include long-range planning, fundraising, marketing, outreach, volunteer recruitment, and technology development. While we are interested in specific skills such as these, it is equally important that Board members be enthusiastic, thoughtful, and willing to volunteer their time.
It is recommended that a Board candidate demonstrate a past or recent history of volunteering for KGNU. There are many ways to volunteer, including: working at the front desk, helping pledge drives, serving on a Committee, or engaging in any number of ways. There is always something you can do for KGNU!
In addition to Board meetings, we ask that you sit on at least one Committee and participate in fund drives. This involvement usually takes a minimum of 12 hours per month--a commitment required by KGNU’s bylaws. We seek diversity of experience and background. Past and present Board members have included laborers, artisans, business owners, engineers, unemployed, retirees, and more.
KGNU relies on over 200 volunteers to run the station in cooperation with a small handful of paid staff members. There are many roles to play at KGNU, and abundant rewards for being a part of one of the country's most successful and engaged community radio stations.
Please feel free to call upon any member of the Nominating Committee or a staff member if you have any questions. Thank you for your interest in KGNU.
