Children entering Kindergarten through 6th grade participate in three different groups according to age: NanoBAXers, MegaBAXers, and GigaBAXers. All three groups are staffed with an adult to child ratio of at least 1:6, and go to Washington Park daily for outdoor social play.
Program by Week and Theme:
Week 1: July 6-10
Nano: Free to Be You and Me: Come celebrate yourself and your friends as we express ourselves completely, freely, and fabulously through art, music, and performance!
Mega/Giga: You've Gotta Have Art: In an exploration of various arts media, young artists use the farthest reaches of their imaginations to go beyond ordinary arts-and-crafts, creating a whirlwind of individual and group paintings, found object sculptures, collages, and drawings that engage different themes and reflect their view of the world.
Week 2: July 13-17
Nano: Future Legends: Who are the people and places of our time that will become the legends of tomorrow? Through imaginative storytelling, song, creative movement, and inventive art-making we will embody, narrate, and illustrate the adventures and heroes of today!
Mega/Giga: Musical Madness: A twist on traditional musical theater, young performers will explore voice, instruments, song making, and staging. Drawing on familiar stories and songs, young artists explore characters and scenes, adapt and author material, and enjoy a collaborative process as they gain confidence in their own creative voices.
Week 3: July 20-24:
Nano: Mythical Mammals: Put on your imagination cap and join us as we dream up mythical mammals, their habitats, and special powers, using crafts, movements, and drama.
Mega/Giga: Theater Mania: Theater at BAX encourages the development of dynamic performance artists through visceral experiences engaging voices, bodies, and imaginations. Young actors explore technical skills, improvisational theater games, and embodied storytelling while working towards the development of original, collaboratively-devised material.
Week 4: July 27-31
Nano: Sensory Safari: Sharpen those senses! We’re going on an unforgettable exploration of movement, drama, and art using our sense of smell, sound, site, and touch as our guide. We’ll discover new in the old by moving our smells, hearing our tastes, and touching our sounds.
Mega/Giga: Circus Berzerkus: Ever wanted to join the circus?! Now's your chance! During this playful and creative week with our long-time partners, Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, young ringmasters learn fundamental circus and performance skills, from juggling to stilt-walking, that help build balance, precision, and strength. Our future ringmasters work independently and collaboratively to establish their own unique circus and performance styles, and have great fun doing it! Welcome to the Big Top!
Week 5: August 3-7
Nano: Fairy Tale Fantastic: Let’s see what happens when we take fairy tale classics and place them in our own backyard: Brooklyn! Join us for creative play, movement, and art-making as we discover how our own version of these stories unfold.
Mega/Giga: Producing Podcasts: In a media-consumer world, here's an opportunity to step behind the scenes and become media producers: by learning about and creating original podcasts! Young artists cultivate their authentic voice through this uniquely intimate medium. During this week, we will build relationships as we uncover different stories and storytelling devices. Whether it's investigating local folklore, broader social issues, or interviewing each other, groups will work collaboratively to conceive of an original podcast, its framework, content, and audience.
Week 6: August 10-14:
Nano: Around the World in Five Days: Take a magical journey around the "world" (BAX Building) in five days. Through story, dance, and art we’ll meet and celebrate all kinds of places, people, and the many things in between.
Mega/Giga: Dance Frenzy: In this lively and action packed dance week, young movers use their bodies and imaginations to create original movement using a variety of structured improvisation techniques as well as drawing on a range of dance traditions including contemporary, modern, hip hop, ballet, partnering, and more.
Week 7: August 17-21:
Nano: Oh, The Places You'll Go: You’ll be on your way up! You’ll be seeing great sights! From the moon to a dune, we’ll be using our imaginations, dramatic play, song, and dance, to create and explore lands near and far all without ever leaving the neighborhood!
Mega/Giga: Tumble Moves: Tumbling at BAX integrates movement from modern dance, gymnastics, and partner acrobatics. Tumblers learn fun and fundamental tumbling skills, while increasing their flexibility and weight balance. Exploring basic concepts of time, space, shape, and form, these young tumblers will learn to be expressive through tumbling and basic inverted movement.
