The Modjeska Monteith Simkins Legacy Scholarship honors the remarkable legacy of Modjeska Monteith Simkins, a fearless civil rights leader, educator, and champion of social justice. This scholarship is designed to support students who embody her spirit of activism, leadership, and dedication to community empowerment.
Modjeska Monteith Simpkins had a strong connection to Optus Bank, formerly known as Victory Savings Bank, which played a pivotal role in supporting Black economic empowerment during the segregation era. As a civil rights leader and advocate for economic justice, Simpkins worked closely with Black-owned institutions like Optus Bank to promote financial independence and stability within the African American community.
Victory Savings Bank was one of the few Black-owned banks in the South, providing essential financial services to Black individuals and businesses when mainstream banks refused them. Simpkins, known for her leadership in the NAACP and grassroots activism, understood the power of economic self-sufficiency in the fight for civil rights. She not only supported the bank’s mission but also encouraged Black communities to invest in their financial futures.
Her advocacy extended beyond civil rights into economic justice, aligning with Optus Bank’s long-standing commitment to wealth-building opportunities for underserved communities. Today, her legacy continues to inspire the bank’s mission of empowering individuals and businesses through financial inclusion and economic equality.
Through this scholarship, we aim to continue the mission of Modjeska Simpkins by investing in the next generation of changemakers who will carry forward her vision of equality, justice, and empowerment for all. Awarded annually, the scholarship provides financial assistance to students pursuing higher education, particularly those committed to social justice, public service, and community advocacy. Recipients of this scholarship are expected to demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a passion for making a meaningful impact in their communities.
