Students must be a Carnegie Mellon undergraduate pursuing a major or minor in a writing discipline ((e.g., creative writing, English, professional or technical writing, film and media studies, humanities analytics).
Students doing internship for credit are eligible for consideration.
a confirmed internship (including name of organization, name of supervisor with contact information, a description of duties, hours/week, length of internship, etc.)
a personal essay of 1-2 pages max (single-spaced) explaining how this internship will enhance the student’s academic and professional development goals
a current resume (PDF only)
Students are strongly encouraged to pursue all relevant campus resources and funding opportunities to help find and fund their internship. We encourage students to make an appointment with Kristin Staunton (firstname.lastname@example.org), our Career Counselor specialist for English in the Career and Professional Development Center, to learn more about CPDC resources and internships in English. We also encourage students to keep alert for information and deadlines on other Dietrich College internship awards.
All applications will be reviewed and students informed within one week of posted submission dates. The review committee will consist of no fewer than three representatives from English. Award recipients will be notified by email of their selection, along with information about how the award will be distributed.
All award recipients are expected to provide information about their internship to our Marketing and Communications Specialist for coverage in relevant English Department media outlets, and to write a post-internship letter to the award donor summarizing how the internship contributed to your academic or professional pursuits.
Questions about the Sutton Award can be directed to Laura E. Donaldson, Assistant Director of Undergraduate Programs and Academic Advisor, at email@example.com.
