    Board Member Job Description for Thrive Liberation Community Center

    Mission: 

    Thrive Liberation Community Center prepares Black youth and young adults (ages 13-30) to thrive through civic wellness and community care empowering them to live fully, lead boldly, and liberate completely.


    Vision:

    We envision a future where thriving is the baseline for Black youth and young adults, where they are nurtured by their communities, rooted in purpose, and empowered to lead lasting change, embracing joy, rest, and justice as the norm.


    Duties of the Board of Directors:

    Members of the Board of Directors are responsible for carrying out the purposes of the Corporation, implementing decisions of the Active Membership, and managing the affairs of the Corporation in accordance with its Bylaws. Specifically, board member responsibilities include:


    Fiduciary and Legal Responsibilities:

    • Act on behalf of Thrive Liberation Community Center and its interests, putting aside personal concerns, affiliations, or constituencies.
    • Set procedures and policies to ensure Thrive Liberation Community Center is administered according to applicable law.
    • Act in good faith, prepare for meetings, review financial reports, exercise independent judgment, and ensure compliance with legal requirements.
    • Ensure compliance with reporting requirements, uphold legal and governing documents, and make decisions aligned with the organization's mission.

    Oversight and Governance Responsibilities:

    • Supervise the activities of all officers, agents, and committees.
    • Adopt and implement personnel policies providing for the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of employees.
    • Assist in selecting new board members to help the organization achieve its goals.
    • Actively participate in annual board and the Executive Director’s evaluation.

    Fiscal Responsibilities:

    • Assure the sound management of the Thrive Liberation Community Center’s finances
    • Adopt an annual budget prior to the beginning of each fiscal year and approve any expenditures not included in the budget.
    • Review and approve a written Annual Report.
    • Provide or fundraise a minimum initial financial contribution of $250 each fiscal year served to ensure the organization’s stability and growth.

    Development and Strategic Guidance Responsibilities:

    • Develop the resources necessary for the operation, including fundraising efforts and strategic partnerships.
    • Offer guidance to Thrive Liberation Community Center’s development and sustainability efforts.
    • Advise on and contribute to the organization’s strategic plan, ensuring alignment with Thrive’s mission and long-term goals.

    Participation:

    • Commit to participate in monthly board meetings, one board retreat meeting, committee meetings, and two one-on-ones with the executive director.
    • Be timely and present at every meeting with a maximum of three absences from board meetings.
    • Commit of 4-10 hours/month for required development and fundraising activities between meetings.

    Board Terms:

    Each director shall serve a minimum term of two full years. Upon completion of their initial term, each board member will have the option to opt into a second term, contingent on the majority vote of the active membership. No Board member shall serve for more than two consecutive terms. After serving two consecutive terms, board members must wait at least one full term before reapplying to be considered for the Board of Directors.

    Qualifications:
    All Board members must have prior experience in the active interests and/or pillars of the organization which are: people development/empowerment, physical and mental health, government/legal efficacy, and racialized healing.
