  • Do you worry about what would happen to the person you look after if you were taken ill and unable to tell anyone that someone depends on you?
If your answer is yes, the Carers Emergency Card may provide you with reassurance.

What is a Carers Emergency Card?
The Carers Emergency Card will identify you as a Carer in the event of an emergency. It is credit card size and will fit in a wallet or purse.

How will the Carers Emergency Card help me?
It will give you peace of mind. You may be less anxious about going out and leaving the person you care for at home. If you have an accident or suddenly fall ill, anyone finding the card, for example, the Police, Ambulance or Fire Brigade will know you are a Carer and be able to contact the named responders on the card.

  • Who can have a Carers Emergency Card?
The Carers Emergency Card is for all unpaid Carers, those who care for a person of any age who, for reasons such as illness or disability, depends on them. Care workers, who receive a salary for their caring work, are not eligible to hold this Emergency Carers Card.

    How much does it cost?
The scheme is free to Carers in Dumfries and Galloway.

    How does the scheme work?
You can register with the scheme by completing a registration form, or contacting the Carers Centre who administer the scheme by telephone or e-mail. In the event of an accident or emergency situation, the emergency services will contact the people you have nominated to let them know what has happened. They may also contact the person you care for and inform them what has happened if that is appropriate.

How do I apply for a Carers Emergency Card?
Complete the registration form on the next page or call 01387 248600 to request a paper registration form.

    What do I do next?
Tell your nominated contacts that you have given their details on the card because they may be contacted if you have an emergency or accident.

REMEMBER- Always carry the card with you! It needs to be one of the first things that anyone who comes to your assistance sees or finds.
