‘Accessible Somerset’ is a yearlong project that aims to improve the lives of Disabled People by making Somerset more accessible. The project will seek to identify areas in need of improvement across the county by working closely with Disabled people and businesses in the community. The goal is to make physical changes to improve accessibility whilst also raising awareness and educating organisations about access and inclusion.
Accessibility is essential because it ensures that everyone can participate fully in society and access the same opportunities as others. Inaccessible environments can create barriers that prevent Disabled People from living independently, accessing work and education, and enjoying social and cultural activities. Improving accessibility, inclusivity and diversity will lead to a more vibrant and equitable society.
Somerset County Council has partnered with WECIL to deliver the project. WECIL is an award winning, user led organisation supporting Disabled people to live the life they choose. Their approach is people centred and informed by their staff who have lived experience. The project will be supported by their Access and Inclusion Team (WAIT), a group of Disabled volunteers who work to improve inclusion and accessibility for all.
The data that we collect from this survey will be essential for providing instruction on how we deliver this project and improve key areas in Somerset.
