    Position Overview:
    The Sexton is responsible for cleanliness of the building at Ebenezer Baptist Church. The Sexton's schedule is part-time (15 hours per week). The sexton must be able to begin the week on Monday or Tuesday of the week and allow time for a check and touch up or re-cleaning of areas on Friday or Saturday. The Sexton reports to the Pastor, and the Pastor may assign a Church Deacon or Trustee to serve as a secondary point of contact for daily tasking. Working hours will be arranged by the Pastor in collaboration with members of the Personnel Committee to accommodate responsibilities without the need to exceed 15 hours per week on any regular basis.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:   

    • Identifies and notifies the Pastor and/or the Trustee Chair concerning needs for repairs/maintenance.  
    • Inspects and cleans sanctuary, meeting rooms, fellowship hall, kitchen, offices, and rest rooms and all other interior spaces and furniture per cleaning schedule.  
    • Plans with supervisor and carries out seasonal tasks such as deep cleaning.   
    • Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.  
    • Adjusts clocks and light timers according to seasonal changes.  
    • Removes rubbish from the premises for proper disposal. 
    • Clean Exterior Windows  
    • Provides needed cleaning, set-up and breakdown services related to weddings, memorials, and funerals, or outside groups.  
    • Ensures that work/assignment areas are clean and equipment, tools, supplies etc., are properly stored before leaving areas on breaks, end of workday, etc.  
    • Mixes cleaning solutions to proper concentration as necessary for various tasks and maintains an inventory of supplies.  
    • Provide the church secretary with a list of custodial or maintenance supplies as needed.  
    • Uses appropriate personal protective equipment and supplies when performing tasks. Wears and/or uses safety equipment and supplies (e.g. back brace, mechanical lifts, etc.) when lifting or moving heavy objects.  
    • Follow all established safety procedures and precautions when performing maintenance services. Identifies unsafe conditions and where appropriate and takes remedial action (i.e. placement of wet floor signs or cones). Assists in preventative safety concerns.  
    • Performs other responsibilities as directed and negotiated within the limits of the position.  
       

    Required Skills and Experience 

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required: 

    • Education and experience - High School diploma or GED, with one to three years related experience or training.  
    • Driver's license - must have a valid Virginia state driver's license. A commercial driver's license (CDL) is optional, but not required.  
    • Language - ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English.  
    • Mathematical skills - ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure Reasoning - ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.  
    • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant it. Must be able to deal tactfully with staff, volunteers, members, and guests.  
    • Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that enable these senses to meet the responsibilities of the job.  
    • Must be able to manage time and multiple tasks and projects.

    • Must maintain care and use of supplies and equipment and make regular inspections of the building areas.  

     

    Physical Demands and Working Conditions 

    The individual in this position must possess physical and sensory ability necessary to safely and successfully perform all essential job functions and responsibilities: including but not limited to,

    • Working with power tools and other electrical cleaning equipment 
    • Climbing ladders to perform high cleaning and other duties
    • Lifting 50 pounds  
    • Sitting, standing, bending, reaching, and moving constantly during work.  

    Additional Information 

    • The individual will be an employee. 
    • This position does not require membership in the congregation of Ebenezer Baptist Church (EBC). If this position is held by an EBC church member, then member will perform duties as an employee of the church and separate the involvement of a church member during working hours.  

    This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
