    Manual Handling

    Safety Essentials

    Poor manual handling techniques can easily cause permanent disability

    • Over 1/3 of all accidents reported each year in the UK arise from ‘manual handling incidents.
    • The majority of these cause back injury and most are preventable
    •  If you lift incorrectly you can cause slipped disc/joint strain/muscular strain.
    • Serious injuries can build up over a long time and you may be unaware of them

     

    Manual Handling of Loads Regulations 1992

    • Avoid the need for hazardous manual handling wherever possible
    • Assess and reduce risk of injury as far as reasonable practicable
    • Take reasonable care of your health and safety and of others

     

    Reduce these risks by:

    • Dividing up the load
    • Get someone to help
    • Use a trolley
    • Wear gloves/protective clothing/flat shoes
    • Assess the task and the route
    • Plan your task
    • Avoid carrying long distances, take regular breaks
    • Take extra care if your task is repetitive or involves reaching high up
    • Avoid twisting and stooping

     

    Things you must remember to do when lifting any objects

    1. Bend your knees
    2. Keep your back straight
    3. Keep your chin up
    4. Hold the load close to your body

     

     

    • Start with load between your feet
    • Get down to the level of the load, bend knees and hips, keep you back straight
    • Get a firm grip on the load
    • Stand up in one smooth movement, looking ahead to help keep your back straight
    • Keep the load close to your body – DON’T JERK
    • Reverse the above procedure to lower load

     

    Ensure the working environment is clear

    Look out for …

    • Low ceiling (should be indicated)
    • Uneven, damaged floors
    • Poor lighting
    • Extreme temperatures
    • Obstructed passageways

     

    Know your capabilities

    • Don’t lift if the task is beyond your physical capabilities
    • Also avoid lifting if you have any medical condition that could affect your ability to handle loads e.g. pregnancy, illness or injury

     

     

     Assess each load before you lift

    • How can I grasp it?
    • Is it unstable / impracticable?
    • Is it hot/very cold/sharp sides?
