  • Plot Synopsis

This play tells in laughable style the tear jerking story of Nellie Lovelace, an innocent country girl. Munro, the viper, has a wife in Ida Rhinegold, belle of the New Haven Music Halls, but that does not prevent him from trying to pursue Nellie. Nor does it prevent him from driving Adam Oakhart, the blacksmith's son, to drink, from blackmailing rich Mrs. Asterbilt, or from bewitching her daughter, Leonie. There are a number of places in the plot where old time songs are introduced. The text contains full directions for production. Suggestions for the music, all business tableaux, curtain calls, etc., are there.
  • FCT's Production Team

The Production Team for Dirty Works includes Director Marty Kelly. Questions may be submitted on this audition form. If you have any questions after submitting the form, please contact the production team at dirtyworkatthecrossroads@fctstage.org. We look forward to seeing you!

Even though this show is not a musical there are a few songs from the 1890s that will be sung. Please prepare a song to sing from that time period. Plan to stay the duration of the audition time.
  • Audition Roles

  • Note: All roles will be played by actual age of actors 18 years old and up.

Nellie Lovelace - [20 f] a typical heroine of the old-time melodrama - Beautiful, graceful, long blonde hair and a beautifully modulated voice.

Adam Oakheart - [20 m] a handsome but rugged son of the soil. All that a hero should be, but a certain rusticity in his speech and emotions.

The Widow Lovelace - [60 f] a gentle old lady, soft-spoken but firm.

Munro Murgatroyd - [39 m] The villain of the show. Tall, dark, and handsome, with deep throaty voice, beetling eyebrows, side-burns, and a beautifully curled moustache.

Ida Rhinegold - [32 f] big, buxom, dark, and "vampirish". She dresses extremely, with long flowing velvets and big picture hats.

Mookie Maguggins - [45 m] the hired man, and comic relief of the play.

Mrs. Upson Asterbilt [50 f] - a commanding dowager, ostentatiously dressed.

Leonie - [16 f] a sweet, young thing, with a bird-like manner; she trips about the stage as if she were about to take wing.

Fleurette - [28 f] a burlesqued French maid. Very "ooo-la-la" and coquettish in manner, with dark, flashing eyes.

Little Nell - [any age, f] the child with no father. Lisping, childish, and cutesy.

Note: All roles will be played by actual age of actors 18 years old and up.
