    SOS ART, in collaboration with the Fitton Center for Creative Arts in Hamilton, OH, is offering an Artist in Residence (AR) Program targeted primarily to Greater Cincinnati* artists, both established and emergent.

    *Greater Cincinnati defined as within a 50 mile radius of downtown Cincinnati. Exceptions to include non-local artists are possible as decided and agreed upon by the AR committee.

    In tune with the mission of SOS ART, the focus of the residency will be on any given theme of Peace and Justice, involving, whenever possible, the local community. 

    Examples topics include but are not limited to: Hunger, Poverty/Homelessness, Race, Gender, Ecology, Human rights, Non violence, Refugees and Immigration, Non discrimination, Disability (physical, mental and otherwise), etc.

    The Fitton Center for Creative Arts is an Ohio-based non-profit community arts organization that celebrates and supports the full spectrum of humanity through equal opportunities in visual and performing arts. It has served the Hamilton and Butler County communities for almost 30 years. It connects people, energizes the local economy, shares a sense of place, and provides a variety of cultural opportunities.

  • Residency Details & Terms

    • Duration- The residency will be three months (length may be customized to a given artist's circumstances and/or needs as decided and agreed upon by the AR committee.)

    • Residency Cycle- Quarterly as follows:
      January - March, April - June, July - September, October - December.

      Other cycles can be scheduled and accommodated as decided and agreed upon by the AR committee.

    • Deadlines for applications- Approximately 8 weeks prior to the start of the residency, i.e. November 1, February 1, May 1, and August 1 for the respective cycles. An AR selection committee will select one artist per cycle from the applications received.

      • The selected artist will be notified approximately 6 weeks before the start of the cycle, i.e. November 15, February 15, May 15, and August 15 for the respective cycles; and invited to commit to participate.
      • Conditions of the residency and all logistical details will be discussed with the selected artist at least 4 weeks before the start of the residency, i.e. before December 1, March 1, June 1, and September 1 for the respective cycles.

    • Physical location- Typically the artist's own studio/workspace. If necessary, the artist may also use the Fitton Center for Creative Arts' facility by arrangement with their leadership.

    • Honorarium- The artist in residence will be offered an appreciative honorarium of $1,000 to cover expenses and other incidentals associated with the residency. $300 will be given at the beginning of the residency and the rest in one or more payments at later date(s) as agreed on with the artist(s).
  • ARTIST RESIDENCY:

    Artist to create a body of their own work on a given theme of peace and justice:

    1. Final result to be discussed and agreed upon at beginning of residency.
    2. Artist to offer at some point during residency one or more Workshops/Presentations/Art Activities relating to body of work and theme, free of charge, to adults/children of community, at Fitton Center for Creative Arts, SOS ART, etc.
    3. Artist to exhibit their work at end of residency at Fitton Center for Creative Arts or other arranged location. Artist is responsible for preparing art for display according to the exhibit rules of the venue, which may include transportation to location and installation. Work could be for sale, 70% to benefit artist and 30% to benefit exhibiting location/AR program.

    CURATOR RESIDENCY:

    Artist to curate a show of works by local artists, including their own, on a given theme of peace and justice:

    1. Final result to be discussed and agreed upon at beginning of residency.
    2. Artist to offer at some point during residency one or more Workshops/Presentations/Art Activities relating to curated works and theme, free of charge, to adults/children of community, at Fitton Center for Creative Arts, SOS ART, etc.
    3. Artist to exhibit curated work at end of residency at Fitton Center for Creative Arts or other arranged location. Artist is responsible for preparing art for display according to the exhibit rules of the venue, which may include transportation to location and installation. Work could be for sale, 70% to benefit artist(s) and 30% to benefit exhibiting location/ AR program

    EDUCATOR RESIDENCY:

    Artist to give a series of free art classes to children/adults, in a given art technique and on a given theme of peace and justice, at Fitton Center for Creative Arts, other Community center, a school or after school program, etc.:

    1. Specifics of classes (number of sessions, duration, technique, etc.) and final result, to be discussed and agreed on at beginning of residency.
    2. Artist to offer at some point during residency one or more Workshops/Presentations/Art Activities relating to theme or progress of the classes, free of charge, to adults/children of community, at Fitton Center for Creative Arts, SOS ART, etc.
    3. Artist to exhibit produced work at end of residency at Fitton Center for Creative Arts or other arranged location. Artist is responsible for preparing art for display according to the exhibit rules of the venue, which may include transportation to location and installation. Work could be for sale, 70% to benefit artist/student(s) and 30% to benefit exhibiting location/ AR program.

    CREATOR RESIDENCY:

    Artist to produce literary/art publication/video, etc. on a given theme of peace and justice:

    1.  Final result to be discussed and agreed upon at beginning of residency.
    2. Artist to offer at some point during residency one or more Workshops/Presentations/Art Activities relating to work and theme, free of charge, to adults/children of community, at Fitton Center for Creative Arts, SOS ART, etc.
    3. Whenever feasible, artist to exhibit work at end of residency at Fitton Center for Creative Arts or other arranged location. Whenever applicable, work could be for sale, 70% to benefit artist(s) and 30% to benefit exhibiting location/ AR program
    4. Whenever applicable, created work to be published (eventuality and conditions to be discussed with artist at beginning of residency.)

    ART EVENT RESIDENCY:

    Artist to organize a multimedia community art event (including poetry, visual art, performing art, panel discussions, etc.) on a given theme of peace and justice:

    1. Final result to be discussed and agreed upon at beginning of residency: recruitment and involvement of local poets, visual and performing artists, presenters, etc.; date and location of art event, etc.
    2. Artist to offer at some point during residency one or more Workshops/Presentations/Art Activities relating to work and theme, free of charge, to adults/children of community, at Fitton Center for Creative Arts, SOS ART, etc.
    3. In addition to exhibiting visual art during event, artist to also exhibit work at end of residency at Fitton Center for Creative Arts or other arranged location. Artist is responsible for preparing art for display according to the exhibit rules of the venue, which may include transportation to location and installation. Whenever applicable, work could be for sale, 70% to benefit artist(s) and 30% to benefit exhibiting location/ AR program
    4. Whenever applicable, artist to also organize a community poetry reading session on the theme of the residency.
    5. Whenever applicable, created work to be published (eventuality and conditions to be discussed with artist at beginning of residency.)

    3. Residency Proposal Letter - Letter expressing interest in the program that covers the following topics:
      • The type of residency requested* (Artist, Curator, Creator, Educator, Art Event, or Other.)
        *Please note that each type has its own specific requirements. Please consult the drop down menu on the previous page for an outline of each residency type.)

      • The theme the residency will address. The chosen theme should be a peace and/or justice-related issue.
      • Detailed summary of proposed project and how it relates to the chosen theme, including:

        A.) Scope: What the project will consist of, what materials or resources will be needed/utilized, estimated timeline, how the project will come together, and what the end result will look like (e.g. exhibition, film screening, performance.)

        B.) Community Engagement: In addition to achieving the end result described above- The other purpose of the residency program is educating the public about your proposed theme and facilitating their active participation with what you have created. Discuss how this will be achieved (e.g. by conducting a free public workshop, holding a school-based performance or lecture, etc.) and how you will encourage participants to think about the theme, personalize it, and/or adapt it into a creative activity.

    4. Proposed Residency Budget - The artist in residence will be offered an appreciative honorarium of $1,000 to cover expenses and other incidentals associated with the residency. Please include a rough estimate of expenses you anticipate. This may include art supplies or other creative materials, framing and/or printing costs, rentals or services (e.g. equipment, editing fees, etc.)

    5. Letters of Reference - Two letters from individuals familiar with the artist in a personal and professional capacity, and whom SOS ART may contact should additional information be needed.

    6. Portfolio - At least 5 images of past work or link to website/artist portfolio of work.
