Girls everywhere are discovering the many ways they can explore their passions, learn new skills, and gain exposure to a diversity of career opportunities. In an effort to expose youth to as many different career paths as possible, Girls Empowerment Network has introduced a new virtual volunteer opportunity: Advice Archives! This short video series will give youth a glimpse into the lives of relatable role models.
What should be included in my video?
Suggested prompts:
- What is the best piece of professional advice you’ve received?
- What is the most challenging aspect of your job and what do you enjoy most
- What skills do you use most frequently in your profession?
- When do you feel your most powerful and confident in your work?
- What coping skills do you use to navigate feelings of overwhelm or stress in your position?
- What insight would you share with your 14-year-old self?
We’d also love to ensure that the video is as visually engaging and dynamic as possible, so please feel free to include props, show examples of your work, or even share a photo of yourself from elementary, middle, or high school!
Be sure to check out our Volunteer FAQs. This document is full of tips and guidelines!
Keep in mind:
- The target audience for your Advice Archive video will be girls in grades 6-12. Please remember to use language that is inclusive and accessible to someone as young as 11 years old.
- Some folks have jobs that youth will be familiar with (like Veterinarian or Dentist). Other volunteers have jobs that require more explanation, like working in Marketing or Finance... remember to keep things related to what girls know. If you’re in Marketing—can you draw correlations between what you do and advertisements they may have seen? If you’re in Finance can you help them think about their own piggy banks at home and draw basic connections to your day-to-day tasks?
- We ask our presenters to be conscientious of their choice words. You can share your ideas and perspectives, but please do not impose your personal values throughout your video. Additionally, please refer to this list of insensitive/exclusionary phrases before filming your videos.
