The GMA Workforce Insight Report provides an evidence‑based picture of the UK grounds workforce and the pressures shaping its future. Grounds staff play a crucial role in maintaining the quality, safety and sustainability of sport and green spaces. With over 30,000 employees and significant volunteer contribution, the sector is a vital part of the UK’s sport and recreation system.
However, the workforce faces mounting challenges. Whilst many workers remain satisfied in their roles, concerns around pay, progression, workload and work–life balance are increasingly evident. At the same time, employers are navigating tight budgets, rising costs and wider economic uncertainty.
The Workforce Insight Report brings together updated salary benchmarks with findings from the GMA’s 2024 research to outline the current state of the sector and the risks to long‑term sustainability if action is not taken. It also provides the foundation for the GMA’s upcoming Fair Work Strategy, designed to strengthen standards, support progression and secure a more resilient future for the profession.
