The Role of Student Board Member
The Utah Board of Higher Education is the governing board for the Utah System of Higher Education institutions. The Utah Legislature grants the Board the power to control, oversee, and regulate USHE. The Board’s major responsibilities include selecting and evaluating institutional presidents, implementing policies, reviewing programs and degrees, approving institutional missions, submitting a unified higher education budget request to the Governor and State Legislature, and other responsibilities as outlined in Utah Law.
The Utah Board of Higher Education is comprised of ten Utah residents, including one USHE student. All Board members are appointed by the Governor. The Student Board Member is appointed to a one-year term (beginning July 1).
The Student Board Member is responsible for engaging in the following activities, which equates to a commitment of approximately 80 hours over the course of the 12-month term (including travel time):
- Prepare for and participate in all Board meetings
- Facilitate listening sessions with students from USHE institutions
- Engage in high school and college visits as needed
- As institutional presidential vacancies occur, participate in interviewing and selecting institutional presidents
