  • The Shirley Ann Steinback-Hawthrone Scholarship (SASH) honors the legacy of a lifelong nurse and healthcare executive whose nearly 50-year career exemplified service, leadership, and a deep commitment to education. This scholarship is designed to support Georgia college students pursuing education or training in nursing who embody service, advocacy, stewardship, and humanity. 

     

    Eligibility Criteria

    • Must be enrolled in a Georgia post-secondary institution pursuing a degree in Nursing at any level (diplomas not inclusive).
    • Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

     

    Award Amount

    • $2,000 USD total
    • Award is sent directly to the student via PayPal

    • Round 1 Application Period: 5/1/2026 - 1/1/2027
    • Finalists Notified by: 2/1/2027
    • Round 2 (Finalist) Submission Period: 2/1/2027 - 2/15/2027
    • Scholarship Award Announced and disbursed by: 2/28/2027


    Round 1 Application Requirements (Deadline: 1/1/2027)

    • Official Georgia college transcript
      • Applicants must submit an official transcript from their current Georgia college or university. Unofficial transcripts, screenshots, advising reports, and high school transcripts will not be accepted.
      • Transcripts must clearly indicate that the student is majoring in nursing, and/or is progressing towards an applicable degree program.
      • Transcript must verify academic standing and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
    • One-page essay 
      • Essay Prompt: Describe a personal experience that shaped your desire to pursue a career in nursing.How has this experience influenced the way you approach leadership, community impact, or care for others?
      • Essay Length: Maximum one-page
      • Essay Format: 12-pt Arial font, single-spaced, and 1-inch margins
    • Headshot 
      • Submit a recent professional-quality headshot with a neutral background (white wall or outdoor setting preferred).
      • Blurry or low-resolution photos, AI-generated images, distracting backgrounds, images with filters, and selfies are not accepted.

     

    Round 2 Application Requirements (Deadline: 2/15/2027)

    Only applicants selected as finalists will be invited to submit Round 2 materials.

    • The Give Higher Campaign Video Submission
      • Video Topic: "The SASH Scholarship is based on four values: Service, Advocacy, Stewardship, and Humanity. Which one of these values resonate with you the most and why? Tell us how you demonstrate this value in your education and career."
      • Video Format: Your video is recorded in landscape orientation.
        Video Length: Your video is between the time length of 3 minutes minimum and 5 minutes maximum.
      • Video Quality: Your video is recorded in high quality lighting and audio with no added media, including
        but not limited to, pictures, videos, background music, and captions
      • Student Presentation: You must present yourself in a professional manner, similar to an interview.
    • Proof of Enrollment from the Office of the Registrar to prove you are enrolled in a Georgia accredited institution for the current semester. No other forms of enrollment documentation will be accepted.
    • PayPal information to process the scholarship award in case you are selected as a scholarship recipient. Scholarship funds will be distributed via PayPal. The scholarship winner must have an active PayPal account to receive their award. PayPal accounts are free to create. No alternate payment methods will be offered.
