First, read a bit about Mauritius’ history:
In addition to its breathtaking natural wonders, the peninsula of Le Morne Brabant in Mauritius is deeply rooted in cultural history and legends. It is said to have served as a refuge for escaped slaves, known as Maroons, in the early 19th century.
On February 1, 1835, following the abolition of slavery, a police expedition arrived at the base of the mountain to inform those who had escaped slavery of their newfound freedom.
Tragically, the arrival of the police was misinterpreted as a threat, leading the Maroons to leap from the mountain’s summit, choosing death over the fear of re-enslavement.
