Can you find a Statue of a Cat in Kuching?
Kuching the “City of Cats”! The story goes that when the first British Rajah of Sarawak, James Brooke, asked the locals what the name of that city was, they thought he was pointing to a cat. Thinking he was asking them what that animal was, they replied “kuching,” which means “cat” in Malay.
This is why there are several cat statues in Kuching and also an entire museum dedicated to them. There are more than 2,000 cat-related items in the museum, and you can even see a mummified cat here that is said to be more than 5,000 years old
The most famous of these city’s statues and one of the most iconic symbols of Kuching is the “Cat Statue” along the riverfront erected in 1987 to celebrate the 25th coronation anniversary of the Sultanate of Sarawak.
