JOB TITLE: Director of Sports and Recreation
Salary Range: $55,000 - $65,000
Responsible for the development and maintenance of an effective, well rounded and comprehensive Sports and Recreation department that has a strong focus of physical, intellectual, and social growth for the general community.
Program Responsibilities:
• Oversee all aspects of the following programs and services, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, staffing, implementation, and promoting:
• Gymnasium Supervision
• Sports Programs, Events, Leagues and Summer Camps
• Leisure activities for all ages and abilities
• Gymnasium Rentals and Scheduling
• Develop, facilitate, and monitor programs and services in the area of sports and recreation. (Analyzes internal (Membership) and external (Community) markets for these programs and services.)
• Supervise and coordinate all summer sports camps.
• Manage inventory and ensure that recreational facilities and equipment are clean, safe, and well maintained.
• Works as On Duty Manager based on the monthly On Duty Manager schedule developed by the OD Manager.
• Establish rules and regulations for recreation programs and facilities.
• Conform to top trends within recreation industry.
Administrative Responsibilities:
• Publicity – work closely with the Marketing department
• Payroll – submission of personnel paperwork and approval of timesheets.
• Coordinator of Program Management
• Equipment & Supply Procurement
• Budget Development & Implementation
• Prepare and coordinate year department budget.
• Review, adjust, and recommend month end budget reports.
• Attend program staff, MST, and COE meetings.
• Interview, hire, train and schedule full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal employees and consultants.
• Collect and submit accurate data, forms, and reports to meet internal deadlines.
• Perform all necessary administrative responsibilities, including but not limited to phone calls, emails, recruitment of new participants, and other program-related duties.
Management Responsibilities:
• Direct reports: Sports & Recreation Staff
• Budgets
• Staff hiring and supervision
• Staff performance reviews
• Procurement of supplies and equipment
• Program development
Agency Responsibilities:
• Recruitment of new members and the retention of renewal clients
• Liaison to the political and co-sponsored events with other agencies and in-house departments
• Fundraising and solicitation for sponsors for all Sports and Recreation programs
• Supervise and negotiate gym rentals for the agency
• All other projects assigned by supervisor
• Build and maintain positive relationship amongst members of agency
Relevant Scope Measures:
• Required to develop Annual Budget for Sports and Recreation
• Required to monitor budget reports – statistical reporting
• Prepares all necessary documentation for monthly, quarterly and/or annual reports. This includes collecting participant data, tracking and reporting program statistics, preparing a descriptive narrative, goal completion, assessment reports, new initiatives, and mission integration - monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of assigned programs.
• Fundraising for sponsorships for Sports & Recreation and JCC Programs
• Semi-annual representation of department to Board of Directors
Service to Members and Community:
• Recruitment of new members and the retention of renewal clients
• Liaison to the political and co-sponsored events with other agencies and in-house departments
• Must be aware of all other Department Programming. Providing gym and field space when possible with a balance to membership needs
Minimum Qualifications:
• Degree in Sports Management, Physical Ed, or Recreation Management or 3-5 years experience in the Sports and Recreation field in a supervisory role
• Knowledge of Sports Management
• Ability to teach and coach children to adults, preferred
• Ongoing professional Development Classes
• First Aid/CPR/AED certification preferred
• Excellent customer service
• Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Ability to travel locally between locations (Bernikow & Avis) to oversee programs, special events and rentals
• Ability to work a varied schedule to include evenings and weekends depending on season and activities.
