  • *DEADLINE EXTENDED! Due to high demand we are extending the deadline to Monday 17 August!*

This is an open call inviting womxn in visual arts to apply for consideration in an upcoming show, In The Loop, an exploration of womxn in street art and beyond, distilled into a gallery setting.

    WHAT?

My name is Jane Mutiny, and along with my co-curator Lee Hybrid Desire, we are looking for artworks to feature in our new show In the Loop.

We all struggle to keep up with recycling and reducing our waste. As artists we are aware of our environmental footprint with our materials. What about all that stuff that’s just thrown away? Can’t we make something out of it? So we thought, how about taking a very normal material - a cardboard box - and turn it into a piece of beautiful art? Why not!

Those who use spray paint might recognise the paint brand Loop. These paints come in boxes of four, and though we love the paint, it is the boxes we are interested in repurposing into an artwork.

When flattened out, the boxes look similar to the below diagram, and measure about 605mm x 272mm. We will be providing boxes to all selected artists courtesy of our friends at Paintbox Grafitti in New Cross.

  • Back in 2024, Jane curated a show - Queens of The Wall - at Copeland Park in Peckham, and part of the exhibition featured this very type of art.

  • The idea is to take the flattened out box and paint your art onto it, effectively making a collectable, beautiful artwork out of something which would otherwise be thrown away.

You can do exactly this, or we also encourage experimental interpretations. For example, you can cut up and rearrange the box in a new way, or you can paint your work on the box 3D rather than flat, to make a ‘sculpture’ of sorts. One base, limitless possibilities; Keeping a unifying theme whilst allowing for creative freedom.

    WHERE?

The show will be hosted by Atom Gallery in Stoke Newington, London

    WHO?

This is an open call to all womxn / female identifying and non-binary artists practising any visual arts discipline.

    WORKSHOPS

We will have the gallery over two weekends, meaning there will be scope for workshops on Saturday 19 and Saturday 26 September, if anyone is interested in hosting these. Unfortunately, we are unable provide any funds ourselves, but you can put these on for free, ask for donations, or charge guests a nominal fee to cover expenses/your time. If you’d like to do this, please mark the box below, and give us an outline of your workshop idea.
