  • 🐕‍🦺K9 Certification Interest

Our K9 handlers can discuss the possibilities with you and review the intense training schedule that is required in excess of the KSAR training schedule.

    • The BC Search Dog Association requires that all dogs and their handlers be affiliated with a SAR group for a minimum of two years before being invited to training camps and dogs older than 2 are not accepted into the program.

    • All dogs must be approved by the RCMP to be accepted and placed on task.

New handlers should be under no illusions – it’s not cheap to train a dog for SAR. Most of the cash outlay will be yours (vet bills, travel, gear, gas, suitable vehicle). If you’re lucky, your GSAR team may subsidize an annual training trip to a BCSDA course, but for the most part, you will spend a decent amount of your own money doing this.

Please see the BC Search Dog Association’s website for more information.

  • 🦺 GSAR Training Program

If you do not currently hold a JIBC GSAR Certificate in BC you will be required to complete the GSAR Training Program with KSAR. Completion of the GSAR Program is mandatory.

The GSAR Training Program runs annually in the Fall:

    • 3rd/last week of September
    • 3rd/last week of October
    • 3rd/last week of November
    • Runs from Monday-Friday 6:00PM to 10:00PM, and Saturday 9:00AM to 4:00PM.

Will you be able to attend the GSAR Training Program?

  • 📅 Member Hour Requirements

The primary reason people leave volunteer organizations is the inability to meet the commitment requirements. Joining KSAR requires a significant investment of time and effort. After completing recruiting training, you'll be expected to:

    • Attend regular training sessions three times a month (including at least one weekend day) - Assist with monthly equipment safety checks
    • Participate in quarterly business meetings, special events, and social activities.
    • Engage with specialty teams and work groups.

Annual volunteer hours typically range from 100 to over 500, with an average of around 200. KSAR expects a minimum two-year commitment to the Society upon receiving GSAR certification.

  • 🩺 Fitness & Health

Applicants should be reasonably fit and have no chronic health issues that would interfere in performing strenuous activities in demanding remote conditions under adverse conditions. For example, you may be asked to help carry a 200 lb. man on an improvised litter over rough conditions for a few kilometres. Each member must be able to respond quickly without becoming a victim themselves.

  • 👮 Criminal Record History

As a SAR volunteer, you will be serving the RCMP and the public in a trusted capacity, potentially working with vulnerable individuals and minors. Therefore, a clear Criminal Record Check (CRC) is mandatory for all members. This check will be conducted upon joining and reviewed every five years to ensure ongoing eligibility and trustworthiness.

ℹ️ A link will be sent to you with login information to complete a CRC.
