About our Taonga
Our greenstone taonga are authentic Nga Tahu Pounamu pieces from the Hokitika and Arahura regions. Our bone taonga are handcrafted by Bone Art Place in Auckland.
Greenstone varieties
We have our greenstone taonga available in three varieties, however we will send the taonga we have in stock so your order may be a mix of the varieties below.
If you receive a Taonga in a variety that's unsuitable, please contact procurement@kohanga.ac.nz to arrange a replacement.
Kahotea
This type is streaked or flecked with white. The name Kahotea derives from Kaho, meaning light coloured tea (white or clear).
Kahurangi
A highly translucent, lightish green shade, free from dark spots and other flaws. One of the rarest varieties, held in high esteem by Māori.
Kawakawa
A dark rich green with varying intermediate shades, named after the leaf of the Kawakawa. It is the main type used in gem purposes.
