Mountain Biking Experience
These questions will help our coaches meet your expectations during the clinic
How long have you been mountain biking on singletrack trails?
*
Never/newbie
<1 year
1-2 years
3-4 years
5+ years
On average, how often do you ride on mountain bike trails each week?
*
I've only ridden a few times total
1-2 times per month
I ride about once a week
I'm riding 2-3 days a week
I'm riding 4+ days a week
How familiar are you with gears & brakes on a mountain bike and when and how to use them?
*
Very Familiar
Somewhat Familiar
Not Familiar
How would you best describe your riding abilities? If you fall somewhere in-between, opt for where you'd be more comfortable in a group format (the less-experienced groups will progress at a slower pace and spend more time mastering skills while the more experienced groups will progress through some skills a little quicker). *Technical terrain: Trails that require you to maneuver your bike over and around rocks, roots and other features above the ground. The trails are often narrow, sometimes with exposure.
*
Newbie: I am new to mountain biking and have only ridden on dirt a few times or not at all. I am excited to be introduced to the sport!
Novice: I can handle riding on smooth trails but hesitate or walk my bike when it gets technical with obstacles like small rocks, logs, roots, or when it gets steep or has exposure on one side.
Intermediate: I am somewhat comfortable riding varying singletrack terrain. I will try and ride over small rocks, roots, and logs but don’t always know what I did to get through. I have fairly good control of my bike while climbing and descending but have a lot to learn.
Advanced: I am confident riding varying singletrack terrain with technical features such as small to large rocks, roots and logs. I have good control of my bike while climbing and descending. I am comfortable standing to climb and descend and I can handle my bike at speed and in somewhat steep terrain. I ride intermediate/advanced trails with technical obstacles and small jumps and drop-offs.
Expert: I am confident riding challenging, technical black and double black diamond trails. I ride most rocky/rooty sections of trail both up and down. I catch air over man-made jumps and I can jump off 3ft drops or larger with both wheels in the air.
Which of the following most closely describes your approach to mountain biking?
*
I tend to be on the cautious side while learning new sports
I tend to be brave and/or confident in my abilities when learning new sports
I feel I lack some skills and confidence which has hindered my ability to progress (ex: I tend to avoid sections of trails so that I don't crash or end up in a situation that makes me nervous)
I feel I have a good foundation of skills, but my lack of confidence sometimes holds me back (ex: I don't push myself to do intimidating things often even if I know I can probably handle it and/or riders/friends/coaches tell me I can do it)
I am mostly confident but know some of my skills need improving (ie; I tend to go for it even if I am not sure what to do, how to do it, or what the outcome will be)
I am a confident rider with a strong foundation of skills and want to get faster and/or smoother over obstacles and technical terrain.
When climbing a steep section of single-track how do you respond?
*
I don't have enough experience mountain biking to know
I usually get off my bike and walk to the top of the climb
I try to stay on my bike but I often find the front tire lifts or rear tire slides and I end up off my bike
I charge up it full force but generally don't make it to the top and I am not sure why
I feel like I am a strong climber and can almost always shift my weight appropriately to stay on the bike & finish the climb
When riding downhill on a single-track trail, do you feel more comfortable sitting on your saddle or standing?
*
Sitting on saddle/seat
Standing
Not sure
Are you comfortable riding your bike up & over a standard 6-inch curb by lifting your front wheel?
*

Help us understand your preferred approach to learning and practicing new skills
*
Slowly, to allow plenty of time to practice before moving on to harder skills or progressions
Moderate pace, allowing me time to practice, but maybe not to perfect before moving on to the next progression
Quickly, I would like to be challenged during the clinic, then do the bulk of practicing on my own after the camp
What skills do you hope to focus on over the weekend?
*
Basic handling, balance and body positioning
Technical descending including handling bike at speed, cornering, roots and rock gardens/features
Technical climbing including overcoming obstacles more efficiently
Cornering and switchbacks
Jumps & drops - I want to get my wheels off the ground with jumps and drops for the first time
Jumps & drops - I want to progress on medium to large jumps (clearing 4'+ tables) and drops (features that are 2'+ off the ground)
