2025 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. DC Student Essay Competition

Middle School Division (6th - 8th Grade)
Writing is one of the best ways for youth to express themselves, and students in the District of Columbia will have the chance to explore their power as young people as they write their essays.

Awards will be presented to the top essays in each division, including cash prizes!
Important Information - Please Read and Agree
Rules –

1.    Individuals must be DC residents.

2.    To participate, members must submit their essays via the online submission form by the published deadline (December 23, 2024, at 11:00 PM).

3.    One (1) essay per student will be accepted.

4.    Essays MUST be composed on the topics and follow the word counts listed below.

5.    Essays must have been composed by the youth (dictating to parents to input into the online form is acceptable for younger entrants and those requiring accommodations). Entrants will be asked to certify that their essay follows this rule on the online submission form.

6.    Essays will be judged beforehand.

7.    Winners in each division will receive awards during the MLK Weekend activities.
