  • In this class, students will learn how to use various modes of transportation to get to work or school. Easterseals instructors will work with students to decide what their future transportation needs may be as well as how transportation applies to them now. This in-depth course not only shows students how to apply for public transportation or how to set a maintenance schedule for your car but also safety precautions like knowing the person picking you up is in fact your ride, and not an imposter.

  • Materials Needed –

    • Separate handouts for students and instructors
    • PowerPoint presentations
    • Projector and laptop or desktop computer

    Goals: To provide students with knowledge regarding how to utilize transportation in their areas to help keep or sustain employment.

    • Session 1: Introduction

      • Expectations

      • Transportation and how it applies to you 

      • Future transportation needs?

    • Session 2: On Foot

      • Finding maps of your area: campus, city, etc.

      • Utilizing your technology, Reading a map

      • Paying attention to road signs and crossings

    • Session 3: Transit: MAX, school bus, Paratransit (MAX VIP, ClasTran)

      • What services do you qualify for?

        • How do you apply to them?

      • Knowing the bus routes and times

      • Safety on any public transportation

    • Session 4: Taxi Services: Uber, Lyft, Taxis

      • Safety precautions with apps

        • Knowing if it’s YOUR ride and not a fake one.

      • Fees and timing

      • When to use?

    • Session 5/6: Driving your own vehicle 

      • GPS usage

      • Planning your route

      • Knowing your city’s commuting habits (when is traffic heaviest, safe routes, etc.)

      • Know your vehicle!

        • Parts

        • Maintenance schedule

        • How to use all aspects of it.

    • Session 7: Review and Games

      • Review session going over the material using games and test for student comprehension
