The George Grim Memorial Scholarship was started in April of 2014 in loving memory of Mr. George Grim who died on March 26th 2014.
Mr. Grim was a great and loyally advisor to The Mahoning County Junior Fair Board, and The Boy Scouts of America. He was an American Navy Veteran and an Eagle Scout. George loved to help young people reach their goals, and he passed his love of “Service To Others” along to many different young people in the area.
George was a college graduate who knew well the importance and coast of education. In his memory a group of close friends to George started this scholarship in his memory, knowing that George would have helped anyone who asked for it.
This scholarship is based both on finical need and academics. The recipient of this scholarship may not be the best academic scholar, but he/she must give 100% to everything they due. Applicants that fit the following criteria are eligible to apply. All applicants should be active in their community, school, church, and youth organization. Applicants must also be a member of The Mahoning County Junior Fair Board, The Boy Scouts of America, and/or Girl Scouts. Applicants must adhere to the scholarship guidelines listed in the rules and criteria
Rules/Criteria
1. Applicant must currently be or have been an active member in good standing of the Mahoning County Junior Fair Board, Boy Scouts of America, and/or Girl Scouts of America.
2. Applicant must be a High School Graduate, OR currently enrolled as a College, University, or Trade School student.
3. Applicant must have a sincere commitment to pursuing furthering their education by attending college, technical school, or school of trade; or be currently enrolled in one of the previously listed forms of continued education.
4. Applications must be submitted online by Entry Day of the Mahoning County Junior Fair.
5. Applicants must upload a picture of him/herself with the application.
6. Each applicant should provide three letters of personal reference as described below. Letters of reference CANNOT be written by a family member or a member of the Scholarship Committee.
7. Applicants must submit with this completed application a certified high school or college transcript.
8. Scholarship recipients will be contacted to be recognized at the Youth Day Program during the Canfield Fair and will receive an acknowledgement letter with the scholarship check upon completion of the requirement listed in #9 below.
9. Scholarship monies will be dispersed after the recipient sends a copy of college/technical school tuition/fees or college transcript to the scholarship chairperson to verify proof of attendance to the school of higher education. Scholarship monies will be used solely for tuition fees and/or books or school supplies. Scholarship checks must be cashed by December 30, or the monies will be forfeited back to the scholarship fund. Any exceptions must be approved by the scholarship committee.
10. Applications for this scholarship must be submitted as specified in the guidelines, or eligibility for this scholarship may be forfeited. The scholarship recipients will be chosen by a panel of judges selected by the Geroge Grim Committee. To maintain the integrity of this scholarship, the scholarship committee has the final determination as to the requirements for proof of attendance to college and the dispersal of the scholarship monies. If any question or discrepancy should arise, the scholarship committee has final determination if the funds should be released.
PLEASE PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING BY THE DEADLINE:
1. Completed application.
2. Certified copy of high school/college transcripts verifying a minimum 2.5 GPA uploaded into the scholarship form.
3. Three recommendation: 1 from a club advisor, 1 from an academic advisor and one from another person such as a coach, teacher, youth advisor, employer, etc. References cannot come from family members.
