NCF Community-Driven Internship Program: Academic Year 2022-2023 Internship Proposal Form

New College of Florida (NCF) is sponsoring a select number of nonprofit (charitable 501(c)(3) and social welfare 501(c)(4)) organizations and government agencies in Sarasota and Manatee counties to fund internships with project(s) focused in the arts, humanities, social services, counseling, education, museum or archival work, and related fields to meet community needs, allow for increased student access to paid internships, and bolster local resources. The NCF Community-Driven Internship Program in collaboration with outstanding nonprofit (charitable 501(c)(3) and social welfare 501(c)(4)) organizations and government agencies will provide students with high-quality, experiential learning internships funded by New College of Florida primarily through the Mellon Foundation grant, and additional donors and local foundations. The program will meet the goals of the Mellon Foundation grant by supporting community-driven projects, and strengthening community outreach and engagement.

In order to offer exceptional learning opportunities to students, the NCF’s Center for Career Engagement & Opportunity (CEO) invites organizations to submit an internship proposal for the 2022-2023 academic year. Internship proposals will be selected by a committee based on quality of the experiential learning opportunity and alignment with the goals and purpose of the Mellon Foundation grant.

NCF Community-Driven Internship Program Projects - Internship project(s) should promote the intern’s opportunity for experiential learning and career exploration by allowing for the application of theory and knowledge learned in the classroom to real work assignments in a professional setting. Proposed internships can include, but are not limited to, project(s) focused on ancient and modern languages, culture, history, anthropology/archeology, philosophy, English literature, education, counseling/social services, religion, creative writing, media and journalism, non-profit administration, program development, public relations, fine art and art history, arts management, and visual and performing arts such as music, dance, and theater. New College of Florida: Strengthening Community Outreach and Engagement - The Mellon Foundation has awarded a five-year, $750,000 grant to New College of Florida to support curricular and research initiatives that preserve local history, integrate social and racial justice work into artistic practice and teaching, and explore questions of special interest to the local community. The grant from the Mellon Foundation’s Higher Education and Scholarship in the Humanities program is a testimony to New College’s strength in the humanities, to the vibrancy of the arts community in the Sarasota-Manatee area, and to the promise of the Cross College Alliance (CCA). Internship Funding - The internship site(s) chosen by the Proposal Review Committee will receive a grant to cover the cost of the intern’s salary and minor project and/or administrative costs. The internship site(s) chosen by the Proposal Review Committee will receive the grant in two separate installments. New College of Florida and the New College Foundation, Inc., assume no responsibility for employment related taxes or insurance for anyone compensated through your organization by this grant; please consult your tax advisor. The timeframe of the internship should match either the Fall 2022 or Spring 2023 term for approximately 8 hours a week for 15 weeks that totals 120 hours for the semester. Internships should include mentorship, guidance, and routine feedback from a supervisor with professional expertise and knowledge. Include a statement about the supervision that will be provided to the intern to ensure that the internship is a learning experience that takes place in a safe and productive working environment.*

Interns should be oriented into their role during the first week of the internship (i.e. one-to-one meeting to cover expectations/goals, tour of facilities if working in a physical location, introductions with other staff, handbook/training provided, etc.). Include a statement about the orientation that will be provided to the intern to ensure the intern is acclimated to their role and the culture of your organization.*

In order to ensure the stability of each organization and safety of student interns, we request a financial statement attesting the fiscal solvency of the organization. This can be satisfied by a copy of the organization’s most recent IRS Form 990, as is typically filed annually by 501(c)3 organizations, or a copy of an annual report.*

The Mellon Foundation grant requires each organization to submit narrative reports detailing how the funds will be used during the internship. A narrative report should describe the projects undertaken and the use of the funds, and evaluate the progress made toward achieving the project goals. The narrative report should be no longer than one (1) page. Please submit the pre-internship budget (spending plan) and narrative report in one file here.*

A post-internship budget (spending report) and narrative report will also need to be submitted by the end of the internship and should include a description of the impact or lasting value created by this project that will endure beyond the life of the project. Internship Posting & Promotion - The NCF Center for Career Engagement & Opportunity will post the selected internship opportunities on behalf of the organization and students will apply to specific internships through the career management platform, Handshake. Internship supervisors will receive application materials directly to their email (from Handshake) to review and select a student for their internship. The hiring process will be done through the funded organization (i.e. review applications, interviews, selection of intern, notifying interns, etc.). Due to volume of applications, 2-3 weeks will be allotted from the time of the internship proposal deadline for the committee to assemble and determine awards.
