  • Categorising your Business

We understand that every business is unique, and we want to ensure you are placed in the markets that best suits your products and business model. The information you provide here will help us determine whether you are better suited to the artisan markets, speciality markets, the general markets, or if some of your products may qualify for all markets.

    Artisan Trader

Artisan traders are makers and are at the heart of the artisan' markets, offering high-quality, handcrafted products that are made by the trader themselves. Every item reflects the skill, passion, and creativity of its maker, ensuring authenticity and originality.

In Northern Ireland, artisan traders take pride in using locally sourced materials and ingredients wherever possible. Whether it’s handcrafted jewellery, bespoke textiles, unique artwork, or small-batch food and drink, these products are made with care and attention to detail. For food producers, the emphasis is on using Northern Irish produce whenever available, supporting local farmers and suppliers while maintaining the highest standards of quality and freshness.

Artisan traders bring a truly unique shopping experience, where customers can connect directly with the maker, learn about their craft, and take home something truly special. These independent businesses showcase the best of local talent, celebrating the rich creativity and heritage of Northern Ireland.

    General Trader

General traders offer a broad and diverse range of products that do not fit within the artisan (makers) market category. This includes assembled craft items, vintage collectables, household goods, affordable gifts, and unique finds. These products are often sourced or assembled rather than entirely handmade by the trader, making them more accessible in terms of price and variety.

General traders must be independent businesses and sell products not typically found on the high street, offering customers a chance to discover something different. From pre-loved treasures and retro collectables to carefully sourced crafts and practical everyday items, this category brings an eclectic mix that appeals to a wide audience.

    Mixed Goods
Some businesses may sell a mix of products, where certain items qualify for our artisan markets while others may be approved only for our general markets. To help us fully assess your application, please provide as much detail as possible about all the items you wish to sell.

Providing accurate and detailed information will help us place you in the most appropriate categories for your business.

If you are unsure about any aspect, please contact us to discuss your offerings before completing your form.

  • If you are not the maker of the products you sell, you are likely to be more suited to our speciality or general markets.

  • Determining the Provenance of Your Food/Ingredients

    ARTISAN (Makers Market)

To be considered for the Artisan Market with your food products, you must demonstrate the use of a reasonable proportion of ingredients produced in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. Evidence of the purchase of NI/ROI produced ingredients may be requested.

We understand that not all ingredients can be sourced in NI/ROI and only require the use of local ingredients where they are produced and readily available in NI/ROI.

Please note that simply purchasing ingredients from a local store or wholesaler does not qualify as 'using local produce.' You must demonstrate proof of provenance to demonstrate that the key ingredients were grown or reared in Northern Ireland.

    GENERAL MARKET

If you wish to be considered solely for the General Market, there is no requirement to demonstrate the use of local produce, however where demand for space is high we will try to prioritise street food trailers that can demonstrate some use of local produce in their menu.

  • Allergen Labelling for PPDS (Prepacked for Direct Sale) – Also Known as Natasha’s Law

Natasha’s Law applies to any food item that is packaged before being offered for sale. This includes items such as sauces, sandwiches, cakes, confections, traybakes, or snacks sealed in jars, bottles, bags, boxes, or other containers. These regulations require a full list of ingredients with allergens clearly highlighted on the packaging, among other requirements.

Where Natasha’s Law does not apply:

    • Food packed at the customer’s request: For example, items freshly sliced, weighed, or boxed/packaged to order.
    • Non-pre-packaged foods: Loose items such as fruits, vegetables, fresh meat, or baked goods displayed openly. (Note: Allergen information must still be provided for these products, but this can be done through other means, including written signage or verbally upon request.)

If you are unsure whether your products fall under Natasha’s Law, please consult the Food Standards Agency guidance HERE or contact us for clarification.

  • Free-From Food Claims

  • Producers Licence

Not all our markets hold permission for alcohol sales.

If you are unsure whether a specific market allows the sale of alcohol, you can contact us directly or visit the Department for Communities website to check the list of approved events.

    Approval Process for Alcohol Sales:
Once your trading pitch has been confirmed by us, you will need to contact the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) to obtain written approval for alcohol sales.

This approval must be requested at least two weeks before the market date and is a legal requirement under Article 52D of the Licensing (Northern Ireland) Order 1996.

The approval allows you (or your servant or agent) to sell intoxicating liquor at the event and ensures compliance with local licensing laws.

If you have any further questions about alcohol sales at our markets or the process involved, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

  • CLP Compliance

If you sell candles, wax melts, diffusers, or other home fragrance products, it is essential to comply with the Classification, Labelling, and Packaging (CLP) Regulations. These regulations ensure that products containing hazardous substances are correctly labelled to protect consumer safety. Compliance includes providing clear hazard information, warnings, and instructions on your product labels.

As a trader, you are responsible for ensuring that your products meet these requirements before they are sold. Non-compliance can result in legal consequences and safety risks for customers.

  • Toys and Products with Play Value Compliance

    Clarification for Traders

Under the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011, toys are defined as "any product or material designed or clearly intended (whether or not exclusively) for use in play by children under 14 years of age."
Products with "play value" include items not explicitly marketed as toys but are likely to be used in play by children.

    Important Requirements

All toys must comply with the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 and carry the appropriate UKCA or CE marking on the product or packaging.
Labelling must include: The name and address of the manufacturer or responsible business.
Appropriate warnings and instructions for use where applicable.
If you are the maker you must retain testing paperwork and other compliance documents in their records, as they may be requested by authorities such as Trading Standards.

  • Cosmetic Products Compliance (Skincare, haircare, perfumes, bathbombs soaps etc)

In Northern Ireland, the sale of cosmetic products (e.g., skincare, haircare, perfumes, soaps) is governed by EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and the Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013. These regulations ensure that all cosmetic products sold on the UK and EU markets meet strict safety, labelling, and manufacturing standards.

If you make cosmetic products, you are responsible for ensuring compliance with these regulations, including safety assessments, appropriate labelling, and registration on the UK or EU Cosmetic Products Notification Portal. For resellers, it is essential to confirm that the products you sell have been produced and labelled in accordance with these regulations by the original manufacturer.

  • Copyright and Trademark Compliance

All traders are required to ensure that the products they sell comply with copyright and intellectual property (IP) laws. This includes ensuring that the designs, logos, and branding used on products are not infringing on the rights of others. Copyright infringement and trademark violations can harm small businesses, damage reputations, and result in legal consequences.

    Definition of Copyright Infringement
Copyright infringement occurs when someone uses another person’s original work without permission or proper licensing. This applies to artwork, logos, music, writing, and other creative works.

    Definition of Trademark Infringement
Trademark infringement involves the unauthorised use of a registered trademark (e.g., brand logos, slogans, or symbols) that is likely to cause confusion about the source of the goods.

    Examples of Non-Compliance

    • Recreating and selling items featuring trademarked characters or logos without permission (e.g., cartoon characters, sports teams).
    • Printing unauthorised designs or characters on clothing, accessories, or printed goods.
    • Selling counterfeit or pirated goods, including branded merchandise.

For more detailed information about copyright and intellectual property infringement, please refer to our blog post HERE:

  • Electricity
    Single-Phase Electricity:
Only single-phase electricity is available when provided.

    Prioritisation:
Electricity is prioritised for traders requiring power for cooking or chilling purposes. Art and craft traders are typically not located in areas with access to electricity. Due to high demand from food traders, it is rare that electricity can be provided to stalls selling other types of products.

    Load Limitations:
We recommend traders limit their power requirements to between 6KW and 9kW, as higher loads may be difficult to accommodate, particularly at smaller markets.

    Generator Limitations:
When electricity is supplied via a generator, it cannot be used for sensitive electrical equipment, such as laptops, chargers, or other devices requiring a stable power supply.

    Additional Requirements
PAT Testing:All electrical equipment must be PAT-tested, and certification should be available for inspection.

Extension Leads:Traders must provide their own extension leads with correct adaptors to connect to the generator, ensuring they are suitable for outdoor use.
Extension leads should be at least 10m in length for general food stalls.
Trailers or traders using their own gazebos should ensure their cabling is at least 20m in length.
Power Fluctuations: Power supplied by generators may experience fluctuations. Ensure your equipment is compatible with generator power to prevent damage.

Surge Protection:Traders are encouraged to use surge protectors to minimise risks to electrical devices.

High-Powered Equipment: If your equipment requires high wattage, please inform us in advance to assess feasibility.

    Residual Current Devices (RCDs):
All electrical setups should include RCDs to protect against electric shock and prevent damage to equipment. Ensure your RCD is suitable for outdoor use and tested regularly.

    Weatherproofing:
Ensure that all plugs, sockets, and electrical connections are in good condition, weatherproof and compliant with outdoor safety standards.

    Safety:
Cables must be secured safely to avoid trip hazards.

  • General Risk Assessment

All traders are required to have a risk assessment for their stall and the activities carried out during market events. A risk assessment helps identify potential hazards and implement measures to minimise risks to customers, staff, and the public. This is essential for maintaining safety and compliance with health and safety regulations.

We are unable to register you if you have not completed a risk assessment.  If you need help, and a template, or guide please visit the guidance page on our website HERE
