    Registration does NOT include any easily-obtained Art supplies. Please bring your own pencils, sketchbooks, etc. Specialized supplies will be provided as outline in the workshop descriptions.

It can also be the artwork itself.  This workshop will focus on standard sheet formation, multiple fiber types, stencil making, inclusions, and "pulp painting". Participants will be able to form their own imagery using a pulp painting technique with colored paper pulp to create unique handmade sheets of paper, as well as embed flat materials (photographs, dried flowers, thread, etc)  Open to all levels of experience. This workshop will focus on digital image creation, application, and completion of enameled plates featuring your own photographic imagery.  Participants will be able to create striking enamel compositions that address the surface of the metal plate, the interior of the enamel as well as the enamel’s surface.  Open to all levels of experience.                     SS01 Tuesday 9-11:30 am: Junk Your Journal: Recycled Bookmaking and Collage. 📅 Tuesday AM 🕰 T 9-11:30 am 🧑‍🎨 Instructor: Carly Sherman 💵 Material Fee: $5 🎨 Suggested Supplies: participants are encouraged to bring materials they have collected to include in their own collage, or to even share with others in attendance. Some ‘junk’ will be provided from the workshop presenter's personal collection, but more junk is always better than less! Paper bags will be supplied, but participants may bring their own from home. If you do not want to create a collage in the grocery bag sketchbook, it is recommended that you bring your personal sketchbook or blank slate to create on 🏛 Location: TBD 📈 Class Limit: 20 📜 Looking for a place to glue that month-old receipt in the bottom of your purse? Do you have a heaping pile of used paper bags from the grocery store? Are you a compulsive collector of things, with limited room to store them? This workshop is perfect for you to create with old, new, or forgotten junk! Participants will follow step-by-step instruction of how to transform an old Trader Joe’s or Aldi bag into a usable sketchbook. After creating their sketchbooks, there will be time for experimentation and collage-making with various provided materials and techniques. Lock-in with this session and learn how to become a junk journalist, creating a space for “trash” to become a way to express and experiment with one’s own crafting skills. Participants will walk away with a new sketchbook and a new perspective on collecting and making with junk!

Seamless pattern repeats are patterns that are hard to break into separate elements making them especially fun to design and print. These patterns have been historically produced with relief-carved print blocks from India to Hungary. Each participant will take their print through all steps of conceiving their own custom pattern – from idea to plan to drawing and then to carved print block and printed fabric. Students will walk away with a reusable, hand-carved pattern block and a section of their designed and printed fabric. Open to all levels of experience. No Printing/Dye Experience Necessary.

This workshop focuses on the fundamentals of paper manipulation, structural integrity, and form-building using only three simple materials: newspaper, glue, and masking tape. Participants will learn techniques for rolling, folding, and binding to create striking sculptures that turn a flat, temporary medium into a permanent work of art.

Some of the techniques included are gelatin printing, palette knife painting, foil print transfer, bubble painting, marble painting with watercolor, salt and alcohol on watercolor, printing with found objects, texture plates, printing with plastic bags, paste paper painting, scraping, marbelizing, and more. You will make samples of the techniques and create your own abstract art either by collaging the papers you make or layering the techniques during this hands-on workshop.

Participants will get a chance to explore a variety of materials and techniques that can be used .( ex. walnut ink, intense watercolor pencils, collaging, stamping, stenciling, watercolor ink plus more) A final painting will be created using several of these materials and techniques .

This method uses 24-gauge copper sheet, gesso, Prisma colored pencils, rubber stamps and Stazon Ink to create color and pattern on your metal. 24-gauge copper can be easily cut into simple shapes with Joyce Chen kitchen shears. We will use plastic stencils as a simple way to create shapes.

(Can be photocopied) Pieces of ephemera…wrappers, receipts, tags, notes and cards you have kept.  Small pieces of fabric or anything that is pretty, makes you happy, has texture, and that you can glue down. Any magazine clippings, bits of paper or images you want to incorporate.A heat gun if you have it. Bring a pair of scissors. 🏛 Location: CVA 145-147 📈 Class Limit: 15 📜 Create a book out of chunky cardboard pages held with a tape binding.  Each page can  be finished in a variety of ways to make a meaningful art journal/collage book.  Participants will have time to experiment with collage and mixed media techniques incorporating personal imagery and meaning. Open to all levels of experience. No Book Binding Experience Necessary

                    • 100% for circumstances outside of your control like a family emergency, administrative denial, disaster, etc. Cases will be looked at individually.

                    • 50% if requested 30-59 days before Summer Symposium.
                    • 25% if requested 15-29 days before Summer Symposium.
