     Open Secrets is looking for an outstanding Campaigner to join our small, dedicated team based in Cape Town. Open Secrets is a non-profit organisation working on issues of economic crime and its impact on human rights. We use investigative research, advocacy, and the law to hold private corporations and individuals who commit these human rights violations, to account.

    Contract Period: Starting March or April 2026 for a 12-month contract period (renewable).

    This is envisaged as a full-time position based at Community House in Salt River, Cape Town.

    The Open Secrets team is working a mix of in-office and remotely for the foreseeable future.

    About the Open Secrets Campaigns Unit

    The Open Secrets Campaigns team works to translate the organisation’s investigations, litigation, and advocacy into accessible public narratives and strategic communications that support accountability and systemic reform. 

    The unit’s work focuses on three areas:

    • Disseminating Open Secrets’ work through digital and other platforms.
    • Driving advocacy and campaign initiatives through strategic communications.
    • Collaborating with social movements and civil society partners.

    About this position

    The Campaigner will support the implementation of Open Secrets’ strategic communications and campaigns by producing high-quality content, managing digital platforms, and contributing to advocacy-driven communications. This role is suited to a strong digital communicator who can translate complex work into clear, compelling public content.

     

    Primary Responsibilities

    Strategic communications and content

    • Support the development and implementation Open Secrets’ strategic communications.
    • Translate Open Secrets work into accessible digital content.
    • Contribute content for Open Secrets publications.

    Digital and social media

    • Manage and update Open Secrets’ social media platforms in line with Open Secrets’ communication strategy and priorities.
    • Create and publish high-quality multi-media content including graphics, factsheets, short videos, and short audio clips.
    • Create digital campaign strategies for Open Secrets’ advocacy, investigations, and litigation projects.

     Media and public-facing content

    • Draft media statements and support media liaison activities.
    • Compile and distribute Open Secrets’ Supporters newsletter.
    • Write short blogs and op-eds and write profiles.

    Collaboration, events, and general

    • Support the organisation of in-person and online events.
    • Work collaboratively with the Open Secrets team and with civil society partners in South Africa and other countries.
    • Assist with other ad hoc tasks related to the work of Open Secrets.

     

    Ideal Candidate

    • 1-3 years’ relevant work experience.
    • A creative communicator eager to produce impactful work.
    • Strong work ethic (thorough, thoughtful, and able to manage deadlines), integrity, and a demonstrated commitment to social justice.
    • A collaborative team player with an inquisitive mind.
    • A tertiary qualification (degree or certificate) in a related field in the Social Sciences or Arts (politics, history, arts, multimedia-design, journalism, etc.). Postgraduate studies are an advantage.
    • Experience in producing basic video and audio content for digital platforms.
    • Strong command of basic Microsoft Office Suite programmes, Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, WordPress, and MailChimp.
    • Experience in using social media platforms such X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok.
    • Historically disadvantaged applicants are encouraged to apply.
