🦜 Parrot Outreach Society Volunteer Policy
Introduction
At Parrot Outreach Society, our volunteers are the heartbeat of our rescue. This policy outlines our expectations, communication structure, code of conduct, and organizational procedures to ensure a safe, respectful, and professional environment for all people—and all parrots.
1. Volunteer Conduct & Code of Ethics
All volunteers must:
Treat fellow volunteers, leadership, customers, and animals with compassion and respect.
Refrain from gossip, passive-aggressive behavior, or rumor-spreading of any kind.
Maintain confidentiality and never share sensitive personal information about others.
Follow all instructions from management or the designated shift lead.
Represent Parrot Outreach positively at all times.
Stay drug-free and alert during volunteer shifts.
2. Role Responsibilities & Boundaries
To avoid confusion and ensure safety:
Stay within your assigned duties unless directed otherwise.
Do not speak to adopters or customers about procedures unless you are the assigned retail lead.
If assisting in retail, direct customers to wait for the designated lead.
Volunteers may not rearrange cages or make facility changes without approval.
Every shift has a volunteer lead—this is your immediate supervisor during that shift.
3. Respectful Work Environment
We operate on respect. Therefore:
No bullying, intimidation, or gossip is tolerated.
Sharing personal details or complaints among volunteers is considered harassment.
If you experience or witness disrespectful behavior, report it to Mel or Jen immediately.
Do not attempt to resolve interpersonal issues on your own.
4. Physical Contact & Conflict Protocol
Parrot Outreach maintains a zero-contact policy between individuals:
Volunteers must never place hands on another volunteer or member of the public.
If a disagreement arises, walk away immediately.
Notify the retail lead or volunteer coordinator/manager.
If you are the retail lead and involved, step away if no bird is in danger and notify management.
Only management is allowed to make disciplinary decisions. No volunteer may ban or dismiss another individual.
Any person asked to leave must be documented (who, what, when) and reported to Mel or Jen.
Law enforcement will be contacted if necessary to ensure safety.
5. Attendance & Reliability
If scheduled, show up or notify someone if you can’t.
If you cannot make your shift, you must give sufficient notice so that other arrangements can be made. This ensures proper coverage and avoids disruptions in care.
Repeated no-shows without communication may result in removal.
If you can’t commit long-term, that’s okay—just keep us informed.
6. Understanding the Role of Management
It is essential to understand the leadership structure:
Board of Directors is not involved in daily issues or volunteer oversight.
Management and Retail Lead Volunteers run day-to-day operations.
The retail lead on duty has full authority to make immediate decisions when Mel or Jen is not available.
Volunteers are expected to respect this hierarchy and communicate within proper channels.
7. Social Media & Representation
Volunteers must:
Refrain from posting negative content about Parrot Outreach.
Avoid making posts that appear to speak on behalf of the organization unless approved.
Separate any personal business or social posts (especially related to breeding) from rescue content.
8. Volunteer Breeding Policy
Policy Statement:
Parrot Outreach Society does not accept volunteer applications from individuals who are actively breeding parrots, have parrots or other companion birds in breeding pairs in hopes to breed. As a rescue dedicated to reducing the number of unwanted and displaced parrots, we believe that allowing active breeders to volunteer presents a conflict of interest with our core mission.
We welcome individuals who:
- Have previously bred parrots but have fully ceased breeding operations.
- Are genuinely committed to supporting rescue, rehabilitation, and ethical education about parrots.
- Understand and respect our stance on overpopulation, commercial breeding, and the lifelong commitment parrots require.
Conditions of Volunteer Involvement:
Former breeders may be considered for volunteer roles only if they:
- Are fully transparent about their past involvement in breeding.
- Do not promote, discuss, or advertise breeding practices or animals for sale while volunteering.
- Agree in writing not to use their affiliation with Parrot Outreach Society for commercial gain or reputation enhancement related to breeding.
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of the long-term consequences of breeding and share our values on advocacy, rehabilitation, and responsible care.
if you begin to breed at a later date after filling this out please let us know. Understand that you will be terminated. This is for the well being of the birds. No breeding of any kind (unless for conservation into a program) will be allowed by any volunteer.
Enforcement: Violation of this policy may result in immediate dismissal from volunteer duties and may result in any future involvement with the rescue to not be possible.
10. Dismissal Policy
Volunteers may be removed for:
Gossip, harassment, or spreading private information.
Repeated failure to follow directions or chain of command.
Physically or verbally aggressive behavior.
Disrespect toward staff, customers, or fellow volunteers.
Publicly undermining or misrepresenting Parrot Outreach’s mission.
11. Confidentiality
All volunteers must respect confidentiality and refrain from disclosing:
Rescue-related internal operations.
Volunteer or adopter information.
Ongoing investigations or decisions in process.
12. Acknowledgment
By volunteering, you agree to uphold the values, communication channels, and responsibilities outlined in this policy. Violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action or dismissal from Parrot Outreach Society.
13. Anti-Discrimination Policy
Parrot Outreach Society is committed to creating and maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all. We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind.
Discrimination will not be tolerated based on:
Race or ethnicity
National origin
Religion or spiritual beliefs
Age
Gender identity or expression
Sexual orientation
Disability or health status
Marital or family status
Financial ability or income level
Education level
Political affiliation
All volunteers, staff, adopters, and visitors are expected to treat one another with equity, respect, and dignity. Any behavior, language, or treatment that violates this policy will result in immediate review and potential dismissal from the volunteer program.
🖜️ We believe diversity strengthens our mission. Our parrots don’t discriminate, and neither do we.
