This is the second Unit of the A Certificate Assessment. There are four parts to this Unit. (2.1-2.4).

Suggested lengths for your answers are given as a guide but are flexible, as long as the asessor considers you have answered the question.

2.1. In a discussion of horse movement, an issue to consider is placing studs in horse shoes. Studs are widely used in some equestrian sports. Imagine that you have been asked to deliver a 5 - 10 minute lecture about stud use to a group of junior event riders. Your lecture should include some information about the types of studs, their placement and should clearly discuss both the pros and cons associated with their use. (Can be submitted via video or as a written text and photos/diagrams.) Length guide for a written lecture - up to 300 words.*

2.2. Describe the following three movements using the biomechanical terms you have learned so far: - Leg yield to the left - A flying change from the left to the right lead - A disunited canter. It may help to watch a video of a horse performing these moves. Include the order of footfalls for each of these three movements.*

2.3 (i) The Peak Vertical Forces (PVF) of the trailing forelimb in canter is greater than for any of the other limbs. The PVF at the gallop can peak at over 250%. What does this suggest about the forces exerted on the horse’s body at higher speeds? Explain the implications of the different paces. (ii) Bearing the above in mind, what can we do to reduce any damage to a horse caused by riding at speed? Length guide for 2.3 - up to 200 words *

2.4 (i) You now know a little bit about the anatomy and function of the horse’s spine. Think of three exercises that you do with your horse and describe what is happening to the horse’s spine during each one. You could use jumping grids, school figures, trot poles etc. You may use diagrams to help your explanation. *

2.4 (ii) You have been asked to give a short talk to a group of younger Pony Club members on the condition ‘kissing spine’. You can submit your 3 - 5 minute lecture as a written paper, by delivering and videoing it, or as a (PowerPoint presentation).*
