RUN THE BLOCK is a new mentoring and grant pilot program by the Running Industry Diversity Coalition (RIDC), a nonprofit whose mission is to unite the running industry to improve the inclusion, visibility, and access for Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC). We’re taking a focused approach, starting with Black ownership in the running industry. The awardee will be granted $200,000 to open a new retail running store in the US and dedicated mentorship to support them along the way. Anyone can apply with their store having at least 51% Black ownership. This criteria aims to direct financial support and mentorship towards businesses substantially owned and run by Black individuals, addressing historical barriers to access capital.
We recognize that applicants may not have the full plan for their retail store yet or check all the boxes for the requirements listed in the application. That’s OK! The RIDC is committed to providing the grant recipient with the necessary resources. This will include a network of running industry and retail professionals.
We’re excited not only to hear your ideas but to see them come to life in your application materials. Don’t worry about high-end production value—we’re more interested in the originality and thoughtfulness behind your concept. Let your submission reflect your unique approach and passion. Be creative, and show us what makes your retail concept stand out!
The RIDC will accept applications for this program beginning Monday, March 11, until Wednesday, May 15, 2024. Finalists can expect to be contacted for further interviewing by the end of Summer 2024. All applicants not selected as finalists can expect to be notified by the end of Summer 2024. Finally, The awardee will be selected by Fall 2024.
Want to start your application but not quite ready to submit? We encourage you to begin the application and select "save draft" to continue later.
