Course Information
Our Beginner School is a comprehensive entry point into officiating, combining theory sessions on rules and signaling with hands-on practical training on the court.
Program Inclusions: The course fee covers your initial training and a complete starter kit, including a whistle, lanyard, and your own striped referee shirt. To support your development, we also provide a green "apprentice" shirt on loan for use during your training phase.
Referee Uniform: Referees are responsible for providing their own seasonal uniform:
- Summer: Black shorts, black or white athletic shoes, and black or white socks.
- Winter: Black slacks, black athletic shoes, and black socks.
The Selection Process
To maintain a high standard of officiating and a supportive environment, we utilise a group interview process for all applicants. Candidates are selected based on:
- Communication & Attitude: Demonstrated during the group interview.
- Availability: Matching our current roster openings for Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday competitions.
- Age: Meeting the minimum requirement of 14 years of age.
Please note due to high interest, only successful candidates will be contacted with an invitation to interview as positions become available.
Developing Quality Officials
Officiating is a rewarding but demanding role that requires a specific skillset. While our pathway is designed to support every trainee, progression to a Striped C Grade is based on performance and is not guaranteed upon course completion.
The McKinnon Basketball Association is committed to the safety of both our referees and our players. We ensure that officials only progress to higher grades once they have met the rigorous standards set by Basketball Victoria. Our priority is to mentor referees who are confident, capable, and prepared to manage the game effectively.
