    Developmental Competency Components
  • Here are descriptions for each of the requested competency factors. Please consider these as you provide your ranking and feedback.

    • Knowledge of the Profession. Verbal, written, and clinical articulation of systems theory and systemic concepts.
    • Human Diversity & Social Structures. Identify parts of one’s identity and social location; determine the influence of culture and worldviews; describe experiences of power, privilege and oppression; understand the influence of transference and countertransference; integration of location of self, cultural competence, and cultural humility in clinical application.
    • Professional Ethics, Law, and Identity. Review, apply, and integrate AAMFT Code of Ethics, applicable state laws, and mandatory reporting requirements from both a theoretical and clinical perspective.
    • Practice of Therapy.  Identify and integrate a systemic model of therapy into clinical application. Develop a systemic treatment plan for a variety of populations and presenting problems; demonstrate the ability to apply a systemic model to the treatment of individuals, couples, and family systems.
    • Research & Evidence-Based Practices. Ability to identify the parts, meaning, and significance of a research article and its findings; review of research and evidence based practices in relation to clinical presentations and populations being served; identification of gaps in research; integration of research and evidence based practices in clinical application; consistent application of APA formatting.
    • Professionalism & Interpersonal Communication. Students are expected to adhere to the university's Code of Conduct and expectations outlined in the Clinical Handbook in all interactions with faculty, students, supervisors, and clients.
    • Effective Use of Supervision & Feedback Application. Students are expected to engage in supervision at all times, consistent with Clinical Handbook policies. It is expected that students are critically considering feedback received in supervision and there is clear demonstration of working on the identified growth areas based on the feedback provided.
    • Hour Accrual. Students are expected to acquire around 72 therapy hours (36 relational) and 36 supervision hours (24 NCU and 12 local) per course if they qualify for the program hour requirements. If students have less than 50% of the expected hours, there will be a deduction in points for this assignment.
    • Capstone Progress. Each case presentation will focus on a specific component of the Capstone presentation. Awareness of what changes are needed, based on faculty feedback, will be assessed in this factor.
