Safeguarding

As a driver, you have the responsibility to be conscious of ways to recognise abuse, vulnerability and harassment in young people and adults.

Drivers are the eyes and ears of their communities, if you spot the signs and know how to report your concerns, you can be a major force in tackling crimes.

Vulnerable passengers may;

Demonstrate a lack of knowledge of their surroundings or home address

Allow others to speak for them when addressed directly

Show signs of injury, malnourishment or are unkept

Appear tense, submissive, nervous and/or paranoid

You should also be aware of adults putting young people into your vehicle who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and young people being picked up and taken to hotels, particularly at odd times of the day and night.

To report your safeguarding concerns, in an emergency, contact the police, call 999;
if the person is not in immediate danger, contact the police, call 101.

Accepting a journey

You cannot reject a journey because a passenger is physically or mentally impaired - remember, not all disabilities are visible.

You must accept a passenger's wheelchair or mobility aid - unless they don't fit into your vehicle

Passengers with Assistance Animals

You must accept a passengers' guide and assistance dogs - unless you have a medical exemption supplied by your licensing authority.

These animals receive extensive training and are very docile

Passengers who need assistance

You must provide reasonable assistance when requested and wherever possible
If a passenger requests physical help please assist when safe and appropriate to do so.

Important! You cannot ask passengers for an extra fee for carrying their assistance animal or providing physical help.

Not doing the above will result in serious negative consequences for you such as putting your private hire licence at risk, losing your ability to drive with Skyline and legal prosecution.
