Sanctuary for Families is New York’s leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Position Overview:
Sanctuary for Families’ Economic Empowerment Programs is seeking a temporary, part-time ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) instructor to cover a class taught by a staff member going on leave. This position would run from the beginning of January 2025 through May 2025, with a two week holiday break at the end of the calendar year. The class meets twice a week, Monday and Thursday, 12:00 PM - 2:30 PM. The class meets on Zoom.
The instructor would be paid for 7 hours of work per week: 5 hours of teaching and 2 hours of administrative work (including class prep and meetings with literacy program staff.) This position is fully remote. Compensation is $50 per hour. Please note that the instructor would be hired as a contractor.
Class curriculum/materials will be provided by the program staff. In addition to leading class, the instructor would be expected to prepare for classes, make minor adjustments and additions to class materials, post and review class materials on Google Classroom, and communicate with program staff about students’ performance.
This is a low intermediate to high intermediate level ESOL class, with an emphasis on reading. The students are survivors of domestic violence or other forms of gender-based violence and as such, experience with trauma-informed approaches to teaching is highly preferred.
Key Qualifications:
- ESL/ESOL/EFL teaching experience, preferably within adult education
- Facility with Zoom and GSuite (including Google Classroom)
- Commitment to learner-centered, participatory education
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care/pedagogy
- Understanding of and ability to work with people of diverse national, ethnic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds
- Commitment to working to end gender-based violence
