Petition to the Catholic Charities SF Board of Directors:
We, the undersigned employees and union members of Catholic Charities SF, write to you not only as staff but as people who have committed our time, hearts, and labor to advancing the mission of this organization.
For months, we’ve been engaged in negotiations with management to secure a fair and just contract, one that reflects the value of our work, the realities of inflation, and the vital role we play in the success of this organization. Despite our good-faith efforts, management has come to the table with proposals that not only fail to move us forward, they attempt to move us backwards.
Rather than recognize and reward the workforce that keeps this organization running, management has proposed a series of deep concessions that would harm workers across the agency. These include:
- Increased out-of-pocket healthcare costs for employees
- New limitations and restrictions that our union representative—who has negotiated contracts across multiple sectors—has never before seen proposed by management
- Stagnant wage increases that don’t keep pace with inflation
We are especially disheartened to learn from the publicly available Form 990 tax filing that executive staff received raises exceeding 30% while frontline workers are being offered increases that do not even keep pace with inflation. This has created confusion in bargaining because management is denying that these figures are true.
We are deeply frustrated.
But we are also united.
We’ve shown up to bargaining. We’ve rallied, shared stories, and spoken out. And we will continue to escalate until we win a contract that honors our contributions and ensures sustainability in our work.
One union member said it best:
“I went to Catholic school, and we always had fundraisers and drives collecting and donating items for the families that Catholic Charities serve. I'm appalled by the behavior of upper management and frankly disgusted. I live from paycheck to paycheck and can barely afford the rent here in this great city called San Francisco, where I was born and raised. I will continue to serve with love, as I was raised to do. I invite upper management to come on down to the trenches, where we work, and see how we serve the families that we serve. Thank goodness God is watching. In Jesus' name.”
We are calling on you, the Board of Directors, to intervene.
You have the power and responsibility to hold leadership accountable to the values this organization claims to represent. We ask that you stand with us, push management to meet our core demands, and help bring this process to a just conclusion.
Until there is a fair contract, there is no labor peace.
Signed,
Members of SEIU1021 Union
